About this experience

Reykjavík and Reykjanes are neighbours that rarely appear on the same itinerary. This private day tour fixes that - beginning with a proper exploration of Iceland's capital before heading south to one of the most volcanically active landscapes in Europe, all within a single, unhurried day.

The morning belongs to Reykjavík. Your guide navigates the city's key landmarks, architecture, and neighbourhoods at a pace that favours understanding over ticking boxes. The city is small enough to feel human and layered enough to reward attention - there is a reason Icelanders are so fond of it. Lunch follows at a favourite local establishment in the Reykjavík area, chosen for quality rather than footfall.

The afternoon shifts entirely. Barely twenty minutes from the city's edge lies the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, where the geology stops being background scenery and becomes the main event. Krýsuvík and Seltún are a landscape of boiling mud pots, steaming vents, and mineral colours that look painted rather than natural. Gunnuhver - Iceland's largest mud pool, named after a seventeenth-century ghost - roars continuously from a platform above the steam. The Reykjanestá headland closes the day at the lighthouse, where the Atlantic meets the land and the Bridge Between Continents puts you physically on the boundary of two tectonic plates.

Cancellation for this tour

Free cancellation until 7 days before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

Who this is not for

  • Not for last-minute planners — free cancellation ends 7 days before, longer than most tours here.
  • Priced per vehicle, so it is poor value for one or two people and good value for four or more sharing.

Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

Alessandro from Easy Travel was amazing. He is a true relationship builder who introduced us to Iceland and Easy. This is not your standard bus tour, Alessandro spends time to understand you and tailor experiences that matter to you. We would use Easy again when back in Iceland.

What an amazing Icelandic tour we had today with Alessandro from Easy Travel Iceland! His knowledge of Iceland, and of the world at large, is impressive. He met our criteria including a focus on the nature, finding sites without tourists, minimizing the drive times between sites. Alessandro was keen to tailor the day to our desired pace and interests. The Friodheimar GreenHouse venue was inspiring and such a great fit with our interests. Thank you Alessandro, for your attention to detail and for your capacity to make this day a riveting experience.

City tours — questions people ask

Do I need a city tour of Reykjavík?

Probably not. Reykjavík's centre is small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes, and Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, the Old Harbour and Laugavegur are all on the way. A short driven tour (/experience/1194803/) makes sense if you have limited mobility, a few hours between a flight and a tour, or want the outer sights like Perlan and Grótta without a bus. Otherwise, walk, and spend the money on a food walk.

How many days do you need in Reykjavík?

One full day for the city itself, plus however many days you use it as a base for tours. Most people spend the first and last nights here and take day trips to the Golden Circle, the South Coast and the sea. Three to four nights in Reykjavík with three day tours is a sensible first Iceland trip. Longer than that, move on; the country is the point.

What is the Imagine Peace Tower and when is it lit?

A column of light on Viðey island, just off Reykjavík, dedicated by Yoko Ono to John Lennon. It is lit each year from 9 October, Lennon's birthday, to 8 December, the date he died, plus a few other dates including New Year. Elding runs an evening ferry and walk to the tower (/experience/1301/) during the lighting season. Outside those dates the island is still worth an hour for the walk and Richard Serra's sculptures.

Is Viðey island worth visiting?

For a quiet two hours, yes. The ferry (/experience/1539/) takes twenty minutes from the Old Harbour in summer and five from Skarfabakki all year. There is a cafe in the old house, a small church, walking paths and views back across the city. Nothing on it is dramatic, and it is exposed to wind, so pick a calm day. It suits a spare afternoon better than a planned one.
