City tours: questions people ask

Do I need a city tour of Reykjavík?

Probably not. Reykjavík's centre is small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes, and Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, the Old Harbour and Laugavegur are all on the way. A short driven tour (/experience/1194803/) makes sense if you have limited mobility, a few hours between a flight and a tour, or want the outer sights like Perlan and Grótta without a bus. Otherwise, walk, and spend the money on a food walk.

How many days do you need in Reykjavík?

One full day for the city itself, plus however many days you use it as a base for tours. Most people spend the first and last nights here and take day trips to the Golden Circle, the South Coast and the sea. Three to four nights in Reykjavík with three day tours is a sensible first Iceland trip. Longer than that, move on; the country is the point.

What is the Imagine Peace Tower and when is it lit?

A column of light on Viðey island, just off Reykjavík, dedicated by Yoko Ono to John Lennon. It is lit each year from 9 October, Lennon's birthday, to 8 December, the date he died, plus a few other dates including New Year. Elding runs an evening ferry and walk to the tower (/experience/1301/) during the lighting season. Outside those dates the island is still worth an hour for the walk and Richard Serra's sculptures.

Is Viðey island worth visiting?

For a quiet two hours, yes. The ferry (/experience/1539/) takes twenty minutes from the Old Harbour in summer and five from Skarfabakki all year. There is a cafe in the old house, a small church, walking paths and views back across the city. Nothing on it is dramatic, and it is exposed to wind, so pick a calm day. It suits a spare afternoon better than a planned one.

What are the best indoor things to do in Reykjavík when it rains?

Perlan for the ice tunnel replica and the planetarium, FlyOver Iceland at Grandi for the flight-simulator film, Whales of Iceland for life-size models, and the Lava Show for real molten lava poured in front of you. Several tours bundle these with a boat trip (/experience/225756/, /experience/67729/). The National Museum and the Settlement Exhibition are quieter. Or do what locals do and go to a geothermal pool; rain does not matter in hot water.

How much do city tours cost?

From €19 to €193 a person, with a typical price of €117. That is the median of 11 per-person day-tour fares we currently sell. Multi-day packages and private charters are priced differently and sit outside those figures.

What is the cheapest of the city tours?

Húsavík Whale Museum Ticket with Húsavík Whale Museum, at €19 a person. Read what it actually is before booking on price alone — the cheapest line is sometimes an admission ticket rather than a guided trip, and a large coach costs less per seat than a small-group minibus because it gives you less time at each stop.

How many city tours do you sell, and who runs them?

43 of them, from 28 operators: Your Friend in Reykjavik, Húsavík Whale Museum, Pink Iceland, REYKJAVIK TRANSFERS, Star Travel, Nordur Travel Services ehf and 22 more. Every one is a company we hold a contract with — we do not list everything in Iceland, on purpose.

How long do city tours take?

Day tours run from 1 hour to 7 hours, most commonly about 3.5 hours. Pickup and drop-off are usually inside that figure, so a three-hour tour from Reykjavík can mean closer to four door to door.

Are there cheaper options than a full city tour?

10 of these are admissions or tickets rather than guided tours — Lava Show/ Flyover Iceland/ Whale Museum - Transfer From Your Hotel/Airbnb from €29, for instance. Worth knowing if you are driving yourself and only need entry.

Do city tours include hotel pickup?

31 of 43 (72%) offer pickup. The rest ask you to meet on location. Pickup is the single most common cause of a missed tour in Iceland: it runs to a window rather than a time, and the bus will not wait long.

Can I book a private version of the city tours?

27 of the 43 are private, the other 16 are shared departures. Private costs more in total but is priced per vehicle, so for four or more people it often works out close per head — and you set the pace.

When can I do the city tours?

Across the next 360 days of live availability we hold departures in October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September. That is a rolling window rather than the whole year, so a month missing from that list is not necessarily a month with nothing running.

Are the city tours seasonal?

3 of 43 run only part of the year; the other 40 run all year round. In Iceland that is usually about daylight or ice rather than demand.

How late can I book city tours?

Cutoffs run from 1 to 24 hours before departure, and 16 of them accept bookings inside 24 hours — so booking the night before is often possible. Popular winter tours sell out days ahead regardless of the cutoff.

Can I cancel a city tour booking?

30 of 43 (70%) allow free cancellation at least 24 hours before departure. The exact window is on each tour page and comes from the operator's own policy, not ours. If the operator cancels for weather you are refunded in full.

How fit do I need to be for city tours?

Operators rate them: 33 easy, 10 very easy. Iceland's ratings assume weather — an easy walk in still air is a different proposition in 15 m/s of wind.

Are city tours suitable for children?

32 of 43 are marked family-friendly by the operator. That is their judgement rather than ours, and it usually means the walking is short and the vehicle has a toilet.

Are any city tours accessible?

Operators have flagged accessibility on some: 8 for wheelchair users, 8 for prams and strollers, 1 for limited mobility, 1 for limited sight. Ring us before booking rather than relying on the flag alone — Icelandic sites vary enormously and a flag does not describe the terrain at the stop.

What is included in city tours?

Varies by operator. Across these: wi-fi on board on 6, admission fees on 5, parking fees on 4, food and drink on 2, fuel surcharge on 1. Anything not listed as included is not included — Icelandic operators are literal about this.

Are city tours guided, and in what language?

26 of 43 are guided in person, with guiding offered in Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish and 11 more. English is standard on every shared departure in Iceland; other languages usually mean a private guide.

Where do city tours start from?

They start from Capital Region (Reykjavík), Húsavík, Akureyri & the North, Keflavík Airport. Where a tour starts matters more in Iceland than how long it lasts: the same tour from Reykjavík and from Vík are different days entirely.

What happens to city tours in bad weather?

The operator cancels and refunds you in full — Icelandic operators cancel readily, and that is a good sign rather than a bad one. What they will not do is refund you for a tour that ran and simply had poor visibility. Wind cancels more tours here than rain or cold.
