Private Reykjavík city tour or walking tour?

A small-group walking tour costs about €40 to €46. A private Reykjavík city tour runs €277 to €826 and only pays off for some groups.

Private Reykjavík city tour or walking tour?

The short version

  • Small-group walking tours in Reykjavík list from about €40 to €46 per person.
  • Private walking tours list from €277 to €352 for the group.
  • Private car tours of the city run from about €483 to €826 for the vehicle.
  • Reykjavík's centre is small and walkable, so a car adds little unless mobility or time is a problem.

For most people the small-group walking tour is the right answer. It costs €40 to €46 a head, takes two to two and a half hours, and covers the old town, the harbour and the main sights on foot. The private versions are good, but you are paying for flexibility and a guide’s full attention, not for seeing more.

The group walk

Reykjavik Walking Tour small group - CityWalk (from €40, 2.5 hours) and Walk with a Viking, small group (from €46, 2 hours) are the sensible starting points. Both are on foot. Both give you the layout of the town, which is the real value on a first day. Reykjavík is small enough that you will cover most of it again by yourself afterwards.

Downsides are the usual ones. The pace is set by the slowest person, the guide cannot answer every question, and you share them with strangers.

The private walk

Private Reykjavik Walking Tour - Walk With a Viking lists from €277. Private Walking tour Reykjavik - CityWalk lists from €352. Both are priced for your party, not per head.

Do the sum. At four people, €277 is about €69 each, still more than the group walk but less than people expect. At two, it is about €139 each, which is a lot for a stroll. Private makes sense for a family with children who need a slower pace, for a party with a specific interest, or for anyone who wants to ask questions for two hours without sharing the guide.

The private car tour

Reykjavik City Tour Experience (from €483, 3 hours) and Private Reykjavik City Tour (from €826, 4 hours) put you in a vehicle. The reason to book one is mobility. If someone in your party cannot walk for two hours, or the weather is bad and you have only a short window, a car solves it.

Otherwise, be honest with yourself. The centre of Reykjavík is a few streets. A car gets you to Perlan and the outer sights, and you can do that by bus for the price of a coffee. The money is better spent on a day trip out of town.

Which one for whom

  • First day, two adults, normal fitness: the group walk.
  • Family with young children: a private walk, or skip the tour and let them lead.
  • Limited mobility: a private car tour, and say so when booking.
  • Short on time with a cruise port call: look at a car, because the clock matters more than the money.

Our honest take

Book the €40 group walk and spend the difference on something outside the city. It is the best value in Reykjavík.

Pay for a private walk only if the party is four or more, or the pace matters. Pay for a car only if walking is the problem. We would not book the €826 tour for sightseeing alone, because the city does not need it.
