About this experience

Most ship museums keep you behind a rope. Here you climb the steps and stand on the deck of Íslendingur, a full-size replica of the Gokstad ship, built by Gunnar Marel Eggertsson and sailed by him from Iceland to New York in the year 2000. The hull fills the hall, and you can walk underneath it and put your hand on the planking.

Around the ship, short animated films tell how Íslendingur was built and how the Atlantic crossing was made, and the story of Vegvísir, the Icelandic sign said to keep a traveller from losing their way. There is a display of Viking weapons and armour, and a children's corner where younger visitors can play while the adults take their time.

Dress up as a Viking and use our photo booth, free of charge, as many times as you like. When you are done, the cafe looks straight out over the sea, and the shop has keepsakes worth carrying home.

Practical: ten minutes from Keflavík Airport and on the road to the Blue Lagoon, so it fits either side of a flight. Free parking for every visitor, with room for coaches. Everything is indoors, which makes it a dependable stop when the weather turns. Most visitors spend 45 to 90 minutes.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An Outstanding Viking Experience in Iceland Visiting the Viking World Museum in Keflavík was one of the highlights of our time in Iceland. The museum offers a fascinating journey into Viking history, culture, exploration, and mythology, presented in a way that is both educational and engaging. The centerpiece of the museum, the magnificent Viking ship Íslendingur, is truly impressive. Seeing a full-scale Viking ship up close gives you a real appreciation for the courage, craftsmanship, and seafaring skills of the Viking explorers who crossed the North Atlantic centuries ago. The exhibitions are thoughtfully curated, covering everything from the Viking settlement of Iceland to Norse mythology and the legendary voyages to North America. The displays are informative, well-organized, and suitable for visitors of all ages. What makes this museum special is how it brings history to life. The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the entire experience feels authentic and inspiring. Whether you are interested in history, archaeology, Viking culture, or simply want to learn more about Iceland’s unique heritage, this museum is absolutely worth visiting. I highly recommend it to anyone traveling through Keflavík or the Reykjanes Peninsula. A true hidden gem of Iceland and a must-see for history lovers. 5/5 – Highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Viking World was an excellent museum and a fascinating place to learn about Iceland's Viking heritage. The highlight is the full-size Viking ship Íslendingur, and being able to walk aboard it gives you a real sense of what these incredible vessels were like. Seeing the craftsmanship up close was unforgettable. The exhibits on Leif Erikson, Erik the Red, and the Vinland voyages were informative and engaging, and the displays explaining Viking exploration and daily life were easy to follow. The museum strikes a great balance between history and interactive experiences without feeling overcrowded. Whether you're a history enthusiast or just curious about Iceland's Viking past, Viking World is definitely worth visiting. It was one of my favorite stops in Iceland and gave me an even greater appreciation for the skill and determination of the Viking explorers.

The highlight is getting to step on the real functional longship used to sail to America in 2000. It really gives a sense of perspective: such a huge build from human scale, but so terrifyingly small and vulnerable from an "ocean going vessel" perspective. Vikings crossed the north Atlantic on open decks like this with no shelter from the elements and about half of them sank (which is also the approximate success rate of modern recreations. ) The ship by itself is about 6/5 stars, but the rest of it is just a cute and simple children's museum with a few big sign boards. I read all of them thoroughly, took tons of photos, watched the short video, stared out the viewing window at the sea, and am literally just trying to pass time from my flight arrival at 7 am until my friend's flight arrives at 3pm, and I still ran out of things to do in about two hours. So the rest of the museum is more like a 3/5 for being so miniscule. They have a cafe (closed today) and a lot of tables so maybe if they added wifi and plugs it would be a really great place to sit around and study or read while waiting for airport things. It's more of a decorative hangout space near the really cool ship than a museum. There are some very cool Greenland Inuit carvings, fwiw.
