Viking sites in Iceland: Viking World or Eiríksstaðir?

Viking World near Keflavík is the easy one at €25. Eiríksstaðir in the west is the better story but a long drive. Which to pick and what each costs.

Viking sites in Iceland: Viking World or Eiríksstaðir?

The short version

  • Viking World in Njarðvík costs about €25 and is a few minutes from Keflavík Airport.
  • Eiríksstaðir, the reconstructed farm of Erik the Red, costs about €21 and is in Búðardalur, a long drive from Reykjavík.
  • The Saga Museum in Reykjavík is about €29 and is the easiest if you are staying in town.
  • A guided Viking walk in Reykjavík is about €25 and adds stories to a town with little Viking-age stone left.

Pick Viking World if you land or leave from Keflavík and want one indoor hour. Pick Eiríksstaðir if you are already driving the west and want the real story of Erik the Red. Pick the Saga Museum if you are in Reykjavík and have a wet afternoon. Do not expect Viking ruins: Iceland has very few.

Viking World, near the airport

Viking World: Stand on the Deck of a Viking Ship is from €25 and takes about an hour. It is in Njarðvík, in Reykjanesbær, just next to Keflavík Airport. The centrepiece is a full-size replica Viking ship, and you can walk its deck.

It suits an arrival morning or a last afternoon, when you have a gap and a suitcase. It is also one of the few things in the area that does not depend on the weather.

The downside: it is a museum around one big object. If a ship does not interest you, an hour is long.

Eiríksstaðir, in the west

Eiríksstaðir living history museum is from €21 for about an hour, in the Búðardalur area of West Iceland. It is a reconstruction of the farm tied to Erik the Red and his son Leif Eiríksson, and staff in period dress show you the turf longhouse.

This is the better story. The Greenland and Vinland sagas begin in this valley, and the site is built on the actual ruin. It is also the more remote: from Reykjavík it is a long day for one hour of visit unless you are already travelling the west, or heading to the Westfjords.

The downside: it is seasonal. Check opening dates before you drive out, because it is not a year-round stop. We would not plan a winter trip around it.

Saga Museum, in town

Saga Museum is from €29 for an hour, in Reykjavík. It uses wax figures to run through the settlement and the key moments after it, with an audio guide.

It is the easy one: central, indoor and open in every month. It is also the most staged. The figures are good, but you are looking at a display and not at a place.

A Viking walk in town

History Talks Back: A Viking Walk with Melkorka is from €25 for a guided walk in Reykjavík. We have not walked it, and the listing is short on detail. The walk makes sense as a way to hear the stories on the ground, because little Viking-age stone survives in town. What you get is a person telling you what used to be where.

What to expect from all of them

Nothing here is a ruin. Iceland was settled around 870, and turf and timber do not last. Every site is a reconstruction or a replica, and the better ones say so.

That is not a reason to skip them. It is a reason to match the choice to the trip. A reconstruction on the actual spot, like Eiríksstaðir, is worth more than a good display in a basement. A museum near the airport is worth more than a long drive for an hour.

Which one by trip

  • Landing or leaving at Keflavík, one gap: Viking World.
  • Driving the west or heading to the Westfjords: Eiríksstaðir.
  • Four days in Reykjavík, one wet afternoon: Saga Museum.
  • Wanting stories rather than objects: the walk.

Our honest take

Viking World is the one we would book for most people, because it is the only one that fits into a day you already have. It costs €25 and you can do it on the way to the plane.

If you are driving west anyway, add Eiríksstaðir. Do not drive out for it alone. And skip all of them if you are short on time and have not yet seen Þingvellir, which tells the same founding story with the actual landscape.
