About this experience
PRIVATE HIKING ADVENTURE IN ÞÓRSMÖRK
Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) Nature Reserve is a place that feels like a hidden world—tucked between glaciers, shaped by volcanic forces, and softened by lush birch forests. For us locals, it’s more than just a hiking destination; it’s where we go to reconnect with nature, recharge, and experience the wild beauty of Iceland up close.
This private hiking experience is designed around you—your pace, your interests, and the conditions of the day. No big groups, no set path—just you, your guide, and the freedom to explore Þórsmörk in a way that feels right for you.
This hike is for those who want to:
✔ Experience Þórsmörk without the rush or distractions of a large group
✔ Enjoy slow, immersive travel on a trail few others take
✔ Hike with a local guide who knows the land inside out—sharing stories, hidden spots, and personal connections to this incredible place
Every Hike is Unique
We choose the route based on your group’s wishes, fitness level, and the conditions on the day. These are a few of our favorite trails:
- Tindfjallahringur Loop (8-12 km) – A journey through wild Þórsmörk, weaving between valleys, birch forests, and ridgelines with sweeping views of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. This route captures the contrasts of Þórsmörk—peaceful, dramatic, and always surprising.
- Hvannárgil Canyon (6-8 km) – A hidden gem of Þórsmörk. This narrow canyon hike follows riverbeds, climbs ridges, and rewards you with breathtaking views of glaciers, valleys, and untouched landscapes. It’s a trail for those drawn to Þórsmörk’s more secretive corners.
- Hestagötur Trail (9 km) – A route shaped by history, following old sheep paths through birch forests and rocky ridges, with close-up views of glaciers and remote valleys. Quiet, scenic, and deeply connected to the land.
Distance: 6-12 km | Elevation Gain: 350-800 m | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
No two hikes are the same. Whether you’re seeking a relaxed nature walk or a more challenging adventure, we’ll craft the perfect Þórsmörk experience—just for you.

Cancellation for this tour
Cancelling costs 10% of the price within 999 days of departure. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.
If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is wind above the treeline and river levels after rain — the guide decides on the day. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Midgard Adventure decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until the cutoff shown above, the operator's policy after that.

Sold out on your date?
Seats come back — a cancellation, or the operator adding a vehicle. Tell us the date and we will check once a day and email you if one opens. One email, then we delete the address; nothing else is ever sent to it.
Who this is not for
- Not for families with children under 13 — the operator will not take them, even with a parent.
- Priced per vehicle, so it is poor value for one or two people and good value for four or more sharing.
Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

What a fabulous adventure! Our tour group and tour guide were fantastic. We were so ecstatic to have such an active group of people on our tour allowing us to do multiple hikes and excursions. Our tour guide Alessandro was absolutely incredible! So knowledgeable & friendly. My husband and I loved chatting with him and learning about his personal background and time in Iceland. I would definitely recommend this excursion it was one of our top 2 highlights of our 9 day trip around the ring road!

Our day in Þórsmörk with Ragnar ended up being one of those travel experiences we’ll be talking about long after we get home. Ragnar was hilarious from the start—full of stories about Icelandic life, culture, and folklore that had our whole group rolling with laughter. But beyond being entertaining, he has an obvious passion for both his country and the work he does. You can tell he genuinely loves sharing this place with people. Because it was a private tour, he really paid attention to who we were and what we enjoyed. He quickly realized our group was up for a little adventure and customized the day to match our energy level, taking us to incredible hikes, stunning viewpoints, and hidden spots we never would have found on our own. Along the way, he taught us about the geology and history of the area in a way that was engaging and easy to understand. And then there were the Icelandic hot dogs. What could have been a quick lunch stop became a memorable part of the day, complete with Ragnar’s enthusiastic tutorial on the proper way to stack the condiments. We may never eat a hot dog the same way again. We had some amazing experiences in Iceland, but this one felt especially personal. Ragnar didn’t just guide us through Þórsmörk—he made us feel like we were experiencing like a local. We’re so grateful for the memories and would recommend him & Midgard Adventure in a heartbeat.

The Þórsmörk Super Jeep hiking tour with Midgard totally exceeded our expectations! A massive shoutout to Carlos Gabriel, who is truly one of the best guides I’ve ever encountered. Not only is he an incredibly skilled driver—making the rugged terrain and river crossings feel completely safe and exciting—but he is also a wealth of knowledge. He kept us engaged the entire time, explaining the fascinating local plants, rocks, and geology along the way. The hike itself was incredibly fun and diverse, taking us through a stunning variety of landscapes. The final payoff at the top was breathtaking, offering a magnificent view of the snow-capped mountains and the massive valley below. If you are looking for an unforgettable adventure in Iceland, I cannot recommend Midgard and Carlos enough!

Our family of 4 had an amazing time with Odi and a small group on a Super Jeep tour of Thorsmork. He was very kind to our 9 year old daughter and spent the entire day engaging us with local knowledge. The scenery is incredible and even with poor weather elsewhere its microclimate was mostly dry and even let some sun break through.

Hiking & trekking — questions people ask
When can you hike in Landmannalaugar?
Late June to September. The highland roads to Landmannalaugar are closed by snow the rest of the year, and the opening date shifts with the weather each summer. In season, day tours from Reykjavík (/experience/16823/) run about fourteen hours with a three- to five-hour guided hike and a soak in the hot river. If you have your own 4x4, the meet-on-location hike (/experience/254326/) skips the bus.
How hard is the Laugavegur trek?
Moderate to hard. It is 55 kilometres over four days from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk, with river crossings, snow patches in July and weather that can turn to sleet in August. You do not need technical skills, but you need to carry a pack and walk five to eight hours a day. Guided treks (/experience/738812/) handle logistics and camping gear; the luggage transfer (/experience/1036525/) lets self-guided walkers carry a day pack only.
Can you hike to the volcano near Reykjavík?
Yes, when it is safe. The Reykjanes eruption sites at Fagradalsfjall and around Grindavík have drawn hikers since 2021, and guided tours (/experience/629086/, /experience/620679/) follow the routes the Civil Protection authority has open. If there is an active eruption, access changes daily and tours adapt or pause. The lava is usually cooled and crusted; you see fresh black rock and steam, not flowing lava. Wear boots; the ground is rough.
What should I pack for a day hike in Iceland?
Waterproof jacket and trousers, not a poncho; the wind will shred it. Hiking boots with ankle support, wool or synthetic layers, hat, gloves, sunglasses and a packed lunch with two litres of water. In the highlands add a warm mid-layer even in July. Guides carry first aid and route knowledge, not your rain gear. Cotton jeans and trainers are the most common reason people have a miserable day.
