Eldhraun lava field: which tours stop there?

Eldhraun is the huge lava field beside the Ring Road between Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur, created by the Laki eruption of 1783–84 and now buried under thick moss. It is a stop, not a tour. You will not find a ticket for it. You see it from the road on any trip to Jökulsárlón, and the question is only whether your tour pulls over.

Most one-day trips from Reykjavík do not reach it with time to spare. The cheapest way to stop properly is a two-day tour.

What you see

Soft, grey-green moss covers old lava, in mounds up to knee height or more, for miles. It looks gentle. Underneath it is jagged rock, and the moss itself takes decades to recover from damage. That is why every guide you meet will ask you not to walk on it. There are marked pull-offs with short boardwalks. Use them.

Ten minutes is enough for most people. If you are a photographer, you may want longer. Light matters more than season, although the moss is greenest in summer and wet weather darkens it.

Two-day tours: the best value

The 2-day summer south coast tour (from €573 per adult, minimum age 8) covers Jökulsárlón, Diamond Beach, glacier hiking, and lists Eldhraun, the Bridge of the Volcanoes and Fjaðrárgljúfur on the way. Free cancellation until 3 days before.

The 2-day winter version (from €579) adds an ice cave and northern lights. Here Eldhraun is a “possible stop” on the return journey, which means it depends on time and daylight. Winter days are short. Don’t book it for the moss.

A longer route, the 3-day Highlands and Volcano adventure (from €1,026, minimum age 8), drives through Eldhraun between Vík and the night hotel. That is a drive-through, not a stop.

Private day trips to Jökulsárlón

The private Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach tour (from €1,690, 13 hours) names the Eldhraun lava field on the way, with Skógafoss, Vík and Skaftafell. The Moonwalker private tour (from €2,199 for the vehicle, 12 hours) describes crossing the lava fields and Skeiðarársandur. Both are long days, with about 10 hours in the car. In a private vehicle you can ask to stop at Eldhraun longer.

These are expensive for a roadside view. They make sense only if you want Jökulsárlón in a single day and a driver of your own.

Driving it yourself

With a rental car, Eldhraun costs nothing and takes no planning. It is about 3 hours from Reykjavík, so it is a stop on the way to Jökulsárlón or a turning point for a south coast day. Fuel is available at Kirkjubæjarklaustur. In winter, check road conditions on road.is before setting off.

Our honest take

Do not book a tour for Eldhraun. Book the south coast or Jökulsárlón trip you want, and check that the itinerary mentions a stop here, not just a drive-through.

If you have two days and no car, take the 2-day summer tour. It is the cheapest way to get the lava field, the lagoon and a glacier in one booking, and it gives you time to stand on a boardwalk rather than look through a window.

If you only have a day, the lava field is a window view. That is fine. Spend the time at Jökulsárlón instead.

Private day trips are good for a family who wants to set the pace, but at €1,690 or more, do the maths for your group first.
