Helicopter tours from Skaftafell: which flight?

What €409, €674 and €1,615 buy you over Vatnajökull, why the landing matters more than the minutes, and the four-passenger rule nobody mentions.

Helicopter tours from Skaftafell: which flight?

The short version

  • Every one of these flights leaves from Skaftafell terminal on the south-east coast, not Reykjavík — about four and a half hours' drive from the capital.
  • The cheapest is 30 minutes with no landing, from €409. The one-hour flight with a glacier landing is €660.
  • A landing is what separates a scenic flight from a memory. Pay for that before you pay for extra minutes.
  • Every departure needs four passengers. Book with fewer and you may be combined with others, rescheduled or refunded.
  • Laki, Landmannalaugar and the longest route are summer only. The glacier flights run all year.

Take the one-hour Glacier Edge tour with a landing at €660 if you can afford it, and the 30-minute no-landing flight at €409 if you cannot. The step from €409 to €660 buys you the thing you will talk about afterwards: the engine winding down on a patch of moraine with nobody else on the ice. The steps above €660 buy you more ground covered, which is a different pleasure and not everyone’s.

All of these fly with Atlantsflug out of the Skaftafell terminal in the south-east. That matters for planning more than anything else on this page. Skaftafell is around four and a half hours from Reykjavík, so this is an add-on to a Jökulsárlón day or a ring-road trip, not a morning out of the capital.

The two glacier flights

Glacier Edge (No Landing) is 30 minutes, from €409, with departures roughly every ninety minutes from 09:30 to 16:30. You fly the outlet glaciers on Vatnajökull’s southern edge — Svínafellsjökull, Skaftafellsjökull — through valleys and along icefalls, and come back. Parking is free and there is coffee afterwards.

Glacier Edge with Landing is up to an hour of which about 40 minutes is flying, from €660, and puts you down once near the ice. Same terrain, one landing. The extra €251 is the whole difference between looking at a glacier and standing on the edge of one.

The 75-minute pair

Two flights sit at €674 and they do different things.

Lagoons, Glaciers & Colourful Mountains runs all year, covers rhyolite mountains, outlet glaciers and the lagoon country around Skaftafell, and lands once. It has the most open departures of the fleet, which usually means it is the one the pilots can fly in mixed weather.

Laki Craters is summer only and goes inland to the crater row that erupted in 1783 and changed European harvests for years. About 55 minutes in the air with a highland landing near the craters. If you have read about Laki, this is the only practical way to see the scale of it. If you have not, the glacier flights are more immediately striking.

When to spend €1,240 or more

Landmannalaugar & Highland Wonders is two hours, from €1,240, summer only, one highland landing. Ultimate Iceland is 150 minutes, from €1,615, with two landings in different places.

These are for people who are not coming back and want the highlands compressed into a morning. They are honest products and well flown. But €1,615 per person is a week’s car hire, and the ground route to Landmannalaugar by super-jeep costs a fraction of it if you have the day.

The four-passenger rule

Every departure listed here needs a minimum of four passengers. You can book as a pair and Atlantsflug will try to combine you with other guests; if the flight does not fill, you reschedule or take a full refund. In shoulder season with a specific date, that is a genuine risk, so keep a spare afternoon.

Flights are weather-dependent, routes change with visibility, and landings are called by the pilot on the day. Nobody can promise you the route in the photographs. Free cancellation runs until 24 hours before departure, which is more useful here than on most tours — the forecast is usually clear enough by then to make the call yourself.

Our honest take

884799 at €660 is the one we would book. An hour, a landing, all year, and it leaves from a car park you were driving past anyway.

If the budget says no, 657444 at €409 for half an hour is still a real flight over a real glacier, and nobody comes back disappointed at that price. Skip it entirely rather than stretching to the two-hour routes on a first trip — the money goes further on an ice cave or two days in the Westfjords.

One practical note: book it for the middle of your trip, not the last day. If the weather grounds you, you want a second attempt.
