Whale watching in the Westfjords: Ísafjörður or Hólmavík
Hólmavík if you're driving in, because it's on the way and the fjord is calm. Ísafjörður if you're already there, or off a cruise ship. Both are summer trips.

The short version
- Hólmavík is about three hours' drive from Reykjavík, on the road to Ísafjörður. Ísafjörður is about three hours further.
- Hólmavík's whale boat costs from €106, takes two and a half hours and shows daily departures from May to September.
- Ísafjörður has two whale boats, from €102 to €117, both two and a half to three hours, both in Ísafjarðardjúp.
- Humpbacks are the usual whale in both fjords. Neither operator can promise a sighting.
- Cancellation terms differ a lot: free until 24 hours at Hólmavík, a charge from booking at one Ísafjörður operator.
Pick Hólmavík if you’re driving into the Westfjords. It’s on the way, the fjord is sheltered, the boat is cheaper and the cancellation terms are the kindest. Pick Ísafjörður if you’re already staying there or arriving on a cruise ship. You’ll see the same kind of whale from either. Both are summer trips. Outside roughly May to September, plan on not going.
Where they are
Hólmavík sits on Steingrímsfjörður, about three hours’ drive from Reykjavík on the main road into the Westfjords. Ísafjörður is about three hours further on, at the far end of that road. If you’re driving a loop of the Westfjords, you pass Hólmavík going in or coming out, and you’ll be in Ísafjörður for at least a night.
That’s most of the decision. Nobody drives to Ísafjörður for a whale boat. People who are in Ísafjörður anyway take one.
Hólmavík
Whale Watching Hólmavík from €106 is two and a half hours on Steingrímsfjörður. Warm waterproof overalls are included. The operator’s pitch is calm water and humpbacks that feed close to shore, so you spend less time sailing out and more time with the animals. If no whales are seen, you’re offered a free rebooking. That only helps if you’re staying nearby, but it’s more than most offer.
It shows a departure every day from May to September next year. Cancellation is free until 24 hours before. Children’s prices run up to age 15.
It pairs well with a night in the area. The ATV trips at Drangsnes are half an hour up the coast, and our ATV guide covers those.
Ísafjörður
Two boats leave from Ísafjörður harbour into Ísafjarðardjúp, the big fjord outside town. Humpbacks feed there in summer, and minke whales and dolphins turn up too.
- Sjóferðir’s Whale Watching Ísafjörður from €102, three hours, with many departures a day in summer. It needs 12 people to sail, with a full refund if it doesn’t. Their cancellation terms are strict: 10% is kept from the moment you book, and 50% within 14 days. Overalls aren’t provided.
- Borea Adventures’ Whale Watching in Ísafjarðardjúp from €117, two and a half hours on their boat Síf, which has a heated cabin. Cancelling costs 30% within seven days. No overalls either, so bring everything warm you own. Guests are asked to photograph whale tails for the area’s identification research.
If birds matter more than whales, Sjóferðir’s Puffin Party from €104 heads for the puffins near Vigur in two and a quarter hours, with whales possible on the way. Our Ísafjörður guide covers Vigur island and the rest of what to book in town.
Westfjords or Húsavík?
If whales are the reason for your trip, Húsavík in the north has more boats, more departures and a longer season. Our Reykjavík vs Húsavík guide compares those. The Westfjords boats are smaller and quieter, often the only boat on the water. You go because you’re in the Westfjords, not the other way round.
When
Both fjords are summer trips. Hólmavík’s calendar shows daily departures from May to September. Ísafjörður’s boats ran into early November this year and are off until next season. Even in July, it’s cold on deck. Dress for winter.
Our honest take
Driving in from Reykjavík: book Hólmavík for your first afternoon in the Westfjords. It’s the cheapest, the calmest, the most flexible to cancel and it’s on your road. Then skip the whale boat in Ísafjörður and spend that half-day on Vigur or Dynjandi instead.
Already in Ísafjörður without a car, or off a ship: take Borea’s boat for the heated cabin and the fairer cancellation terms. Whichever you choose, nobody can promise a whale. Book it early in your stay so a cancelled sailing has room to move.
