How do you get to the Westfjords?+
Drive, fly or take the ferry. From Reykjavík it is around six hours to Ísafjörður by road, partly gravel and closed in winter storms. Flights from Reykjavík city airport take 40 minutes. The Baldur ferry crosses Breiðafjörður from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur in summer. Guided three-day tours (/experience/1126961/) handle the driving. There is no quick way, which is why the region is empty. Our company is based in Ísafjörður; we know the roads.
When is the best time to visit the Westfjords?+
June to early September. Mountain roads open in late May or June, Látrabjarg's puffins are on the cliffs from May to mid-August and Dynjandi is at full flow. Outside those months many roads close, tours stop and services shrink to Ísafjörður and Patreksfjörður. Winter here is for skiing and northern lights, if you can get in. Most operators only run Westfjords tours in summer; check dates on each tour page.
What is there to do in Ísafjörður?+
Walk the old town, one of Iceland's best-preserved, and the harbour. Take the Dynjandi waterfall tour (/experience/753707/, /experience/1152451/), which is the big sight, an hour and a half away. Kayak the fjord, watch seals (/experience/1147454/), take the boat to Vigur island for puffins and eider ducks, or hike Naustahvilft, the bowl above town. Cruise ships call in summer and the town fills for a few hours; time your walk around them.
Where can I ride an ATV in the Westfjords?+
Drangsnes and Djúpavík on the Strandir coast, the eastern side of the Westfjords. Activity Tours runs one-hour rides from Drangsnes (/experience/1176229/) and three-hour rides from Djúpavík (/experience/1167831/) past the abandoned herring factory. The roads are gravel and empty, the fjord views are constant and you need a driving licence. Drangsnes also has free hot tubs on the shore. This is a stop on a Strandir drive, not a destination from Reykjavík.
Is Látrabjarg worth the drive?+
Yes, in puffin season, May to mid-August. It is a 14-kilometre cliff, the westernmost point of Iceland, and the puffins nest at the top where you can lie a metre from them. The drive from Patreksfjörður is rough gravel and slow. Stay back from the edge; the turf overhangs and gives way. Combine it with Rauðasandur's red beach nearby. Outside puffin season it is a long drive to a windy cliff.
