Whale Watching in Iceland: Reykjavík Harbour vs. Húsavík — Which Should You Actually Pick?

If you’re planning a whale-watching trip in Iceland, you’ll quickly run into the same question everyone does: book from Reykjavík, where you’re already staying, or make the trip north to Húsavík, which every blog calls “the whale watching capital of Europe”? Here’s the honest answer — it depends on how much time you have and what you actually want to see.

Reykjavík harbour tours

We work with both Reykjavik Sailors and Elding Adventure at Sea. Boats leave right from the Old Harbour, a five-minute walk from most downtown hotels. No driving, no early wake-up call for a long transfer — you can book a morning tour and still have most of the day free. Sightings are good, especially minke whales and white-beaked dolphins, and both operators run puffin-watching combo trips in summer and northern-lights cruises in winter from the same dock.

The tradeoff: Faxaflói Bay doesn’t have the sheer whale density Húsavík does, and on a slow day you might see dolphins and porpoises but no whale.

Húsavík

Húsavík is a 4.5-hour drive (or a long day-tour bus ride) north. Friends of Moby Dick operates there — a small, family-run operator that has been doing this for over 30 years. Skjálfandi Bay has one of the highest sighting rates in the country, including regular humpback whales, which are rarer to see from Reykjavík. If you’re already doing a Ring Road trip through North Iceland, it’s an easy add-on. If whale watching is the entire reason for your trip and you have the days to spare, Húsavík is genuinely the better bet.

Our honest take

If you have three days or fewer in Iceland and whale watching is one of several things you want to do, book from Reykjavík — the time savings are worth more than the marginal sighting-rate improvement. If you have five or more days and you’re building a proper North Iceland loop, route through Húsavík and treat the whale watching as the highlight of that leg, not an afternoon add-on.
