Iceland by month

Iceland in May is long days, small crowds

May is the month we quietly recommend most. Daylight runs past eighteen hours by the end, the puffins are ashore, the whale season is properly open, and the roads are clear without the July traffic. Prices sit below peak. The country is still brown rather than green for much of it, which is the honest cost.

Not for northern lights, ice caves or highland routes — none of those work in May. If you are coming for winter landscapes you have missed them.

The short version

  • 1134 tours and activities have at least one open departure inside all 31 days of May 2027 — read from our operators' own calendars, not estimated.
  • On an average day in May, 1069 of those tours have a seat on sale.
  • Daylight on May 15th: 18 h 16 min in Reykjavík (sunrise 04:16, sunset 22:32).
  • Median day tour in the month's biggest category, sightseeing day tours: €144 a person.
  • In season: puffins ashore, whale watching, midnight sun, reliable glacier snow.

Computed for the middle of the month from the coordinates of each town, so it is the average day rather than the flattering end of the month. Iceland keeps UTC all year, which is why sunrise is so late in winter.

What runs in May, and what does not

1134 of the 1570 tours our operators sell in May have an open departure inside all 31 days of May 2027. That is a count of real calendar dates, checked when the snapshot below was built.

In season · Puffins ashore

They arrive to breed and leave once the chicks fledge, usually by mid-August. Colonies differ by a week or two.

In season · Whale watching

Boats run year-round from Reykjavík, but Húsavík and the northern harbours are seasonal and sightings peak in summer.

In season · Midnight sun

True midnight sun only above the Arctic Circle — Grímsey. The mainland gets civil twilight all night, which looks much the same.

In season · Reliable glacier snow

Langjökull runs most of the year; the shoulder months depend on snow cover on the approach track.

Not in May · Northern lights season

Needs darkness more than anything else. Nothing is visible around midsummer however strong the activity.

Not in May · Natural ice caves

Caves are re-surveyed each autumn and only open when a guide judges them stable. A warm spell can close one for the season.

Not in May · Highland F-roads open

The Road Administration opens each F-road when the ground has thawed enough to take traffic. Mid-June is typical; some years it is July.

Book these early. These can wait.

Not a sales line — a count of dates. A tour that departs on a handful of days in Mayruns out of them; one that goes daily does not.

Runs most days — decide later

When May turns wet

Wind cancels more Icelandic tours than rain does, so a spare plan is worth having. These still work in bad weather: indoors, underground, in hot water, or short enough to outlast a squall.

Holidays and closures in May

Dates are for 2027. On these days shops, pools and museums run reduced hours or close, and pickups can shift. Most tours still run — check the specific departure rather than assuming either way.

  • 1 May · Labour Day (Verkalýðsdagurinn)
  • 6 May · Ascension Day (Uppstigningardagur)
  • 16 May · Whit Sunday (Hvítasunnudagur)
  • 17 May · Whit Monday (Annar í hvítasunnu)

What to wear in May

A windproof shell, a warm layer and sunglasses. May sun is bright and the wind is still cold.

Iceland in May: questions people ask

Is May a good time to visit Iceland?

For long daylight, open roads and lower prices, it is the strongest month in the year. You will not see the aurora and you will not get into an ice cave.

Are puffins in Iceland in May?

Yes — the colonies fill through May and the boat trips from Reykjavík and the Westman Islands run all month. June and July are busier at the colonies, but May trips already work.

Is it warm in Iceland in May?

Cool rather than warm: single-digit Celsius most days, colder in wind. It is the light that changes in May, not the temperature.

Can you drive the ring road in May?

Yes, the ring road is straightforward by May. The highland F-roads are still shut.
