Iceland by month

Iceland in April is the quiet shoulder

April is shoulder season and priced like it. Daylight is generous — well over thirteen hours by mid-month — the whale boats are back in the north, the first puffins arrive at the end, and the crowds have not. The aurora is still possible in the first half. What you give up is winter: the ice caves close, and the highlands are months from opening.

Not for anyone whose trip is built around ice caves or reliable aurora, and not for the highlands. If you want one guaranteed-feeling season rather than a bit of both, April is the wrong compromise.

  • Daylight on April 15th: 14 h 57 min in Reykjavík (sunrise 05:59, sunset 20:57).

Akureyri

What runs in April, and what does not

1130 of the 1608 tours our operators sell in April have an open departure inside all 30 days of April 2027. That is a count of real calendar dates, checked when the snapshot below was built.

In season · Northern lights season

Needs darkness more than anything else. Nothing is visible around midsummer however strong the activity.

Browse these tours →

In season · Whale watching

Boats run year-round from Reykjavík, but Húsavík and the northern harbours are seasonal and sightings peak in summer.

In season · Reliable glacier snow

Langjökull runs most of the year; the shoulder months depend on snow cover on the approach track.

Not in April · Natural ice caves

Caves are re-surveyed each autumn and only open when a guide judges them stable. A warm spell can close one for the season.

Not in April · Puffins ashore

They arrive to breed and leave once the chicks fledge, usually by mid-August. Colonies differ by a week or two.

Not in April · Midnight sun

True midnight sun only above the Arctic Circle — Grímsey. The mainland gets civil twilight all night, which looks much the same.

Not in April · Highland F-roads open

The Road Administration opens each F-road when the ground has thawed enough to take traffic. Mid-June is typical; some years it is July.

What it costs in April

Median adult fare for a day tour in each of the month's biggest categories. Packages, gear hire, admission tickets and per-vehicle private tours are excluded — mixing a per-car price into a per-person median is how "€4 to €3,276" ranges get published.

Book these early. These can wait.

Not a sales line — a count of dates. A tour that departs on a handful of days in Aprilruns out of them; one that goes daily does not.

Few dates — book early

Runs most days — decide later

When April turns wet

Wind cancels more Icelandic tours than rain does, so a spare plan is worth having. These still work in bad weather: indoors, underground, in hot water, or short enough to outlast a squall.

Holidays and closures in April

Dates are for 2027. On these days shops, pools and museums run reduced hours or close, and pickups can shift. Most tours still run — check the specific departure rather than assuming either way.

  • 22 April · First Day of Summer (Sumardagurinn fyrsti)

What to wear in April

Layers you can shed, a waterproof shell and something windproof. April in Iceland can hand you sun and sleet in the same afternoon.

Iceland in April: questions people ask

Is April a good time to visit Iceland?

It is the best value month of the year if you want long days without summer prices. The catch is that it belongs to neither season fully.

Can you still see the northern lights in April?

In the first two weeks, sometimes. By late April there is not enough proper darkness and tours wind down. Do not build the trip around it.

Are there puffins in Iceland in April?

The first birds come ashore in late April, but the colonies are not reliably busy until May. Book puffin trips for May onwards.

Is the Highland open in April?

No. The F-roads open when the Road Administration judges the ground has thawed, which is mid-June in a normal year and July in a late one.
