March is the month the winter and summer catalogues overlap. Ice caves and aurora are still running for most of it, daylight is back to something like twelve hours by the end, and prices have not yet moved to summer levels. It is also the last month of the natural ice caves, which is the single strongest reason to pick it.
Not for the highlands, puffins or midnight sun — all of those are months away. And March weather is genuinely changeable: expect at least one day the plan has to move.
The short version
1105 tours and activities have at least one open departure inside all 31 days of March 2027 — read from our operators' own calendars, not estimated.
On an average day in March, 1053 of those tours have a seat on sale.
Daylight on March 15th: 11 h 34 min in Reykjavík (sunrise 07:50, sunset 19:24).
Median day tour in the month's biggest category, lagoons & spas: €208 a person.
Computed for the middle of the month from the coordinates of each town, so it is the average day rather than the flattering end of the month. Iceland keeps UTC all year, which is why sunrise is so late in winter.
What runs in March, and what does not
1105 of the 1608 tours our operators sell in March have an open departure inside all 31 days of March 2027. That is a count of real calendar dates, checked when the snapshot below was built.
In season · Northern lights season
Needs darkness more than anything else. Nothing is visible around midsummer however strong the activity.
They arrive to breed and leave once the chicks fledge, usually by mid-August. Colonies differ by a week or two.
Not in March · Midnight sun
True midnight sun only above the Arctic Circle — Grímsey. The mainland gets civil twilight all night, which looks much the same.
Not in March · Highland F-roads open
The Road Administration opens each F-road when the ground has thawed enough to take traffic. Mid-June is typical; some years it is July.
What it costs in March
Median adult fare for a day tour in each of the month's biggest categories. Packages, gear hire, admission tickets and per-vehicle private tours are excluded — mixing a per-car price into a per-person median is how "€4 to €3,276" ranges get published.
Full ranges, and what moves each price, are on our price pages.

Wind cancels more Icelandic tours than rain does, so a spare plan is worth having. These still work in bad weather: indoors, underground, in hot water, or short enough to outlast a squall.
Dates are for 2027. On these days shops, pools and museums run reduced hours or close, and pickups can shift. Most tours still run — check the specific departure rather than assuming either way.

What to wear in March
Winter layers with spikes still in the bag. Meltwater refreezes overnight, and March pavements in Reykjavík are more slippery than January ones.
Iceland in March: questions people ask
Is March a good time to see the northern lights?+
Yes, and the equinox period has a reputation for active nights. Darkness is shrinking week by week, so the first half of March is a better bet than the last.
Are ice caves still open in March?+
Usually for most of the month, then they close as the melt starts. If an ice cave is the reason for the trip, go early in March rather than late.
Is there snow in Iceland in March?+
In the interior and the north, yes. In Reykjavík it comes and goes — a green week in March is completely normal and not a sign of anything.
Can you drive around Iceland in March?+
The ring road is open most days, but it is still winter driving with short notice closures. If you have not driven in those conditions before, a guided day tour is the sensible version of the same trip.
