Iceland in February is winter with light returning
February is January with an extra three hours of daylight by the end of the month, which is more useful than it sounds: a south coast day stops being a drive in the dark. Ice caves, aurora and snowmobiling are all still on, and the winter storm pattern is at its most active. It is the month we would pick for a first winter trip.
Not for anyone who wants the highlands, puffins or a self-drive ring road. And if a single fixed date has to work — a proposal, a flight onward the same evening — February weather will not cooperate on request.
The short version
1095 tours and activities have at least one open departure inside all 28 days of February 2027 — read from our operators' own calendars, not estimated.
On an average day in February, 1047 of those tours have a seat on sale.
Daylight on February 15th: 8 h 30 min in Reykjavík (sunrise 09:27, sunset 17:57).
Median day tour in the month's biggest category, lagoons & spas: €208 a person.
Computed for the middle of the month from the coordinates of each town, so it is the average day rather than the flattering end of the month. Iceland keeps UTC all year, which is why sunrise is so late in winter.
What runs in February, and what does not
1095 of the 1608 tours our operators sell in February have an open departure inside all 28 days of February 2027. That is a count of real calendar dates, checked when the snapshot below was built.
In season · Northern lights season
Needs darkness more than anything else. Nothing is visible around midsummer however strong the activity.
They arrive to breed and leave once the chicks fledge, usually by mid-August. Colonies differ by a week or two.
Not in February · Midnight sun
True midnight sun only above the Arctic Circle — Grímsey. The mainland gets civil twilight all night, which looks much the same.
Not in February · Highland F-roads open
The Road Administration opens each F-road when the ground has thawed enough to take traffic. Mid-June is typical; some years it is July.
What it costs in February
Median adult fare for a day tour in each of the month's biggest categories. Packages, gear hire, admission tickets and per-vehicle private tours are excluded — mixing a per-car price into a per-person median is how "€4 to €3,276" ranges get published.
Full ranges, and what moves each price, are on our price pages.

Visit the Golden Circle and explore its wonderful sights in a private tour. From Thingvellir, to Geysir and Gullfoss, you will experience Iceland's wonderful nature.
Wind cancels more Icelandic tours than rain does, so a spare plan is worth having. These still work in bad weather: indoors, underground, in hot water, or short enough to outlast a squall.
Full winter kit and spikes. Wind, not temperature, is what makes an Icelandic February unpleasant, so the shell matters more than the thickness of the coat.
Iceland in February: questions people ask
Is February a good month to visit Iceland?+
For a winter trip, yes — it is the best balance of aurora darkness and usable daylight. For a first trip where you want to see a lot of the country, summer will show you more.
Are the ice caves open in February?+
Yes, and it is one of the busier months for them. Book a few weeks ahead; the natural caves take small groups and the good dates go first.
Will roads be closed in February?+
Some, some days. The south coast and Golden Circle routes are cleared quickly, but closures happen and tours are cancelled rather than run in a storm. That is the system working, not the operator letting you down.
Can you see the northern lights in February?+
There are still around fifteen hours of darkness mid-month, so yes, given a clear sky. Nobody can promise them, and any tour that does is selling you something else.
