Iceland by month

Iceland in November is dark, wet, and half price

November is the least flattering month in the Icelandic year and the one with the clearest reason to come: the natural ice caves open, the aurora has long nights to work with, and everything costs less. It is also wet, dark by mid-afternoon and windy, and more tours are cancelled in November than in any other month we sell.

Do not come in November if the weather has to behave, if you want to see the country rather than a few places well, or if a cancelled day would ruin the trip. This is the month with the highest chance of the plan changing.

The short version

  • 1153 tours and activities have at least one open departure inside all 30 days of November 2026 — read from our operators' own calendars, not estimated.
  • On an average day in November, 1075 of those tours have a seat on sale.
  • Daylight on November 15th: 6 h 37 min in Reykjavík (sunrise 09:54, sunset 16:31).
  • Median day tour in the month's biggest category, lagoons & spas: €208 a person.
  • In season: northern lights season, natural ice caves, reliable glacier snow.

Daylight on November 15th

Reykjavík

6 h 37 min

Sunrise 09:54 · sunset 16:31

Akureyri

6 h 8 min

Sunrise 09:53 · sunset 16:01

Computed for the middle of the month from the coordinates of each town, so it is the average day rather than the flattering end of the month. Iceland keeps UTC all year, which is why sunrise is so late in winter.

What runs in November, and what does not

1153 of the 1608 tours our operators sell in November have an open departure inside all 30 days of November 2026. That is a count of real calendar dates, checked when the snapshot below was built.

In season · Northern lights season

Needs darkness more than anything else. Nothing is visible around midsummer however strong the activity.

Browse these tours →

In season · Natural ice caves

Caves are re-surveyed each autumn and only open when a guide judges them stable. A warm spell can close one for the season.

In season · Reliable glacier snow

Langjökull runs most of the year; the shoulder months depend on snow cover on the approach track.

Not in November · Puffins ashore

They arrive to breed and leave once the chicks fledge, usually by mid-August. Colonies differ by a week or two.

Not in November · Midnight sun

True midnight sun only above the Arctic Circle — Grímsey. The mainland gets civil twilight all night, which looks much the same.

Not in November · Highland F-roads open

The Road Administration opens each F-road when the ground has thawed enough to take traffic. Mid-June is typical; some years it is July.

What it costs in November

Median adult fare for a day tour in each of the month's biggest categories. Packages, gear hire, admission tickets and per-vehicle private tours are excluded — mixing a per-car price into a per-person median is how "€4 to €3,276" ranges get published.

Book these early. These can wait.

Not a sales line — a count of dates. A tour that departs on a handful of days in Novemberruns out of them; one that goes daily does not.

Runs most days — decide later

When November turns wet

Wind cancels more Icelandic tours than rain does, so a spare plan is worth having. These still work in bad weather: indoors, underground, in hot water, or short enough to outlast a squall.

What to wear in November

Full waterproofs — jacket and trousers — a warm mid-layer and spikes for your boots. A coat that is warm but not waterproof is the wrong coat for November.

Iceland in November: questions people ask

Is November a good time to visit Iceland?

It is good for ice caves, aurora and price, and poor for almost everything else. If those three are what you came for, it is an excellent month; otherwise February gives you the same winter with more light.

When do the ice caves open?

Usually early to mid-November, once guides have surveyed the caves and judged them stable. The exact date moves each year and a warm spell can delay it, so book with a few days of slack.

Is it very dark in Iceland in November?

By the end of the month Reykjavík has under six hours of daylight, and the sun stays low all day. Tours start later and finish in the dark.

Does it rain a lot in Iceland in November?

Yes, and it comes sideways. That is why the weather-proof options on this page matter more in November than in any other month.
