Every approach to Þórsmörk crosses rivers with no bridges, and the last of them, the Krossá, changes depth through the day as the glacier melts. That is why the vehicles that go in are high-clearance buses and modified jeeps rather than anything you can hire. Being driven in is not the budget option here; it is the only sane one.

Do not attempt this in a rental car, whatever the map says. The crossings have written off more hire cars than anything else in Iceland, and no insurance covers them.
