About this experience

Lake Kleifarvatn spooky secret: legend has it that this 1km long lake is home to a whale-sized worm although there have been no confirmed sightings. The lake is eerie and surrounded by a jet black lavascape, black cliffs and black sand shores.

The SuperJeep excursion then takes you to Krisuvík where you can walk amongst hissing steam vents, solfataras and bubbling mud pots with the unmistakable smell of sulphur hanging in the air. You‘ll also be able to feel the power of Mother Nature beneath your feet as the ground seems to rumble.

You have the option on the normal hike to the new Lava fields relatively easy for everyone 20-30 min or the full hike on that hike the hiking distance is about 10km (6.2 miles) and is moderate, including parts of the path with some elevated hills. The elevation is 343m (1125 ft). You walk and hike for about 75 min (3.1 miles) each way, and we spend around 90 minutes at the eruption site taking pictures just keep in mind the hike changes daily due to floating lava. We do offer also helicopter addon option (weather depending) on our Private Reykjanes Peninsula tour

The tour continues with visits to the small fishing villages that dot the area before reaching the tip of the peninsula. Here you will find the roaring North Atlantic and huge bird cliffs which stand guard over moon-like, craggy lava fields.

We will then proceed to the Blue Lagoon, from where you can be dropped off at the airport upon request.

This tour lasts highly recommended by us for those who have limited time to experience Iceland. Airport drop-off is not included in the price of the tour.

    Do you know how many waterfalls Iceland has? If not, you should definitely book your tour with Erik from Superjeep.is! He has all the answers and so much more. We had an incredible day visiting breath-taking waterfalls and seeing Iceland's second largest glacier.     We took private 10 seat super jeep northern lights tour with Birgir. We travelled with 3 little ones and my elderly mother. Birgir went above and beyond assisting us with car seats, ensuring everyone could get in and out of the car safely, and making everyone as comfortable as possible with his hot chocolate, entertaining Icelandic stories and history, and parking the jeep to minimize the intense winds. He was patient and knowledgeable, and we got an amazing lights show. As someone who is not easily impressed, this tour gets 10/10 hands down! Thank you super jeep and Birgir!

    Yesterday I went on one of the best tours I’ve ever experienced in Iceland, led by Erik with Superjeep. I enjoyed every second of driving through the snow in a 4x4 to visit the Katla ice cave. I live in Iceland, I’ve been on tours with various companies, and I can say that this company offers truly authentic and unique experiences in groups of just four people. The price is higher than tours for groups of 14–18 people, but the quality is infinitely superior, so it’s definitely worth the investment. Their guides are experts on the country. I thought I knew Iceland, but the lesson in Icelandic geography we had yesterday with Erik and all the stories he told us (not to mention his skilful driving in 30cm of snow) was top-notch.

Super jeeps — questions people ask

What is a super jeep?

A four-wheel-drive truck or van rebuilt for Iceland: raised suspension, huge low-pressure tyres and a snorkel, so it can cross rivers, drive on snow and climb glacier tracks that stop a rental car. Groups are small, usually eight to sixteen people. Super jeeps are how you reach Landmannalaugar in the highlands, ice caves under Mýrdalsjökull and dark northern-lights spots off the main roads. They are pricier than a coach, and rougher.

Is a super jeep northern lights tour better than a bus?

Slightly, for two reasons. A super jeep can leave the tarmac and find darker, more sheltered spots, and with ten people rather than fifty you spend less time waiting at stops. Arctic Adventures' Northern Lights Explorer (/experience/209/) and Northern Lights by 4x4 (/experience/1088067/) are the standard options. The sky is the same either way; a jeep does not make clouds part. If budget matters, a small-group minibus gets you most of the benefit.

When can you take a super jeep to Landmannalaugar?

Late June to September, once the highland roads open. The Landmannalaugar Safari (/experience/341/) is a twelve-hour day from Reykjavík with river crossings, a short hike and a soak in the natural hot river. The rest of the year the road is closed to everything except specially licensed winter expeditions. The dates the F-roads open vary each year with the snow, so if you are booking for June, expect a possible reschedule.

Is a super jeep tour comfortable?

Comfortable enough on the tarmac, bumpy on the rough stuff. That is the point. Expect to be thrown about on lava tracks and river beds, and to sit in a bench seat for several hours. People prone to motion sickness should sit in front and take a tablet. The trade-off is access: you see places coaches cannot go, with a driver-guide who talks to you rather than over a microphone.
