About this experience

The Lake Langisjór and the Eldgjá Canyon is a part of the Vatnajökull National Park. In this Super Jeep tour we will travel the mountain roads to the Lake Langsjór. We might hike to the Peak Sveinstindur and for those that are not willing to hike we can find a good view point from other places accesable in our 4x4 Super Jeep

We depart from the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur. On this tour we drive the mountain road F208 to the Eldgjá Canyon. When we reach the high plateau of the highlands, we turn to the track to lake Langisjór. The route is off the beaten path and only suitable for 4x4 vehicles.

While we drive the main road from the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur our guide will give a briefing about the eruption from Skaftáreldar as we drive through the lava from the eruptions that took place in the year 1783

From the main road we will soon turn to the highland road F208.

Our first stop will be in Hólaskjól Highland Center where we can look at the hidden waterfall. In Hólaskjól Highland Center it is possible to buy some refreshment.

From Hólaskjól Highland Center we will drive to Eldgjá Canyon.

Eldgjá is a fissure created by eruptions that took place in the year 934. The fissure is 60 km long and forms a canyon that extends from the mountain Gjátindur to the glacier Mýrdalsjökull in the southeast. We will observe the fissure and take a good look at the waterfall Ófærufoss.

The total lava flow from the Eldgjá eruption is estimated to be around 19 km3. That makes the Eldgjá eruption the most volumetric lava flow from one eruption in historical time. The origins of the Eldgjá eruption are from the Katla volcano system. We will have a few alternatives if travelers want to do a short hike for 1 – 2 hours depending on the wants of the travelers.

From Eldgjá canyon we take the route to Langisjór Lake. It is about one hour drive to the Lake from Eldgjá canyon in our specialized 4x4 super jeep.

Lake Langisjór, one of Europe’s most beautiful and pristine highland lakes, is tucked in between the beautiful Tungnárfjöll and Fögrufjöll Mountains at the western edge of Vatnajökull Glacier. Measuring 20 km long and 2 km wide in some places, the lake is 27sq km and 75m at its deepest and lies some 640m above sea level.

The view around the lake is magnificent and at the southern end of the lake stands the mountain Sveinstindur (1090 m) which is considered by many to be one of the best views of the panorama of the surrounding area. Views over Lakagígar, Skaftáreldahraun, Öræfajökul and Hekla are possible in clear weather.

If travelers are interested and willing, we might hike to the top of the mountain Sveinstindur. To be able to do that we need good weather. The hike to the top is steep uphill with an increase of 400m in altitude. The view from the top is unique, it is said that in case the weather is good enough, a person should be able to see a view that stretches a quarter over Iceland. From the glacier Öræfajökull in the east, to Hellisheiði and the two glaciers Langjökull and Hofsjökull in the west. The view stretches over all Langisjór additionally, an unforgettable sight to see.

To the right of the lake is the mountain range Fögrufjöll with numerous lagoons between heights and peaks. East of mountains Fögrufjöll runs the glacier river Skaftá, which has historically crashed with catastrophic floods. The floods originate in Skaftárkatlar, a geothermal area underneath the glacier Vatnajökull. From the east of the Skaftá river, one can see in distance the crater Lakagígar, where the lava from the eruptions Skaftáreldar, flooded in the lowlands in the year 1783 – the third largest lava flow on earth since the last Ice Age.

Cancellation for this tour

Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.

If the weather cancels this tour

Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is closed roads — the Road Administration shuts the mountain roads before the operator has to decide anything. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.

  1. 1IceTrek ehf decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
  2. 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
  3. 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.

What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Who this is not for

  • Not for families with children under 12 — the operator will not take them, even with a parent.
  • Not a good fit if you want a relaxed day: 1 day is a long time on the road, most of it spent getting there and back.

Read off the operator's own conditions. If none of it applies to you, this is a good one.

Our tour guide Guffi gave us an absolutely fantastic experience. The weather didn’t look very promising at first, but Guffi was determined and kept searching for the northern lights. Thanks to his persistence, we were rewarded with an incredible display, which we got to enjoy while sipping hot chocolate under the Arctic sky. It was my last night in Iceland and I couldn’t have chosen a better way to end my trip. The photos came out great too. I highly recommend!!!

We had a fantastic tour on our first night in Iceland! Guffi picked us up and provided us with excellent information on the history of Iceland and Reykjavik. Then we found the northern lights and had amazing photographs for over 2 hours! Great hot chocolate and lava snacks!! Guffi was extremely friendly and a great tour guide! Would highly recommend over bigger group tours!

Great night out with Guffi chasing the northern lights. Cloud was a challenge but he didn’t give up and we were rewarded with some spectacular sights. The hot chocolate and snacks were a welcome treat and he was great company and so good to see a person so passionate about their country’s history and geography. He took so many great photos for us too. Would highly recommend.

I went on a 10-day ICETREK Iceland Ring Road with Highlands Tour & Northern Lights trip guided by Patrick, along with my wife and daughter at the end of September 2025. It turned out to be the most amazing trip we ever had. Every single day of the trip was incredible! We visited numerous waterfalls, hiked many trails with jaw dropping scenery, hiked on a glacier, saw whales on a whale watching cruise, went iceberg watching on an amphibious duck boat, went horseback riding on the iconic Icelandic horses, visited the desolate other-worldly highlands with our four-wheel drive Land Cruiser, visited a handful of Viking ruins and former settlements, had an adventurous climb to the top of Sveinstindur Peak with breathtaking views of the surrounding surreal black sand down below that stretched as far as the eye can see, saw many geothermal vents and geysers , and sat in two natural hot spring spa pools, just to mention some of the things we did. We even got to see the Northern lights! We could not have asked for any better guide than Patrick who drove us to all these places. He was very kind, tireless, easy going, full of humor, very flexible with our itinerary and took great care of us. Meeting Patrick's affable native Icelandic business partner, Gudfinnur ("Gufi"), along with Gufi's wife and dog was certainly a highlight. Gufi educated us on Icelandic culture, had us sample his traditional Icelandic fish stew, taught us how to cross streams in a 4x4, and showed us around his beloved Highland area where his cabins were located. We thoroughly enjoyed this thrilling visit to Iceland and I highly recommend ICETREK's Ring Road with Highlands Tour & Northern Lights trip.

Super jeeps — questions people ask

What is a super jeep?

A four-wheel-drive truck or van rebuilt for Iceland: raised suspension, huge low-pressure tyres and a snorkel, so it can cross rivers, drive on snow and climb glacier tracks that stop a rental car. Groups are small, usually eight to sixteen people. Super jeeps are how you reach Landmannalaugar in the highlands, ice caves under Mýrdalsjökull and dark northern-lights spots off the main roads. They are pricier than a coach, and rougher.

Is a super jeep northern lights tour better than a bus?

Slightly, for two reasons. A super jeep can leave the tarmac and find darker, more sheltered spots, and with ten people rather than fifty you spend less time waiting at stops. Arctic Adventures' Northern Lights Explorer (/experience/209/) and Northern Lights by 4x4 (/experience/1088067/) are the standard options. The sky is the same either way; a jeep does not make clouds part. If budget matters, a small-group minibus gets you most of the benefit.

When can you take a super jeep to Landmannalaugar?

Late June to September, once the highland roads open. The Landmannalaugar Safari (/experience/341/) is a twelve-hour day from Reykjavík with river crossings, a short hike and a soak in the natural hot river. The rest of the year the road is closed to everything except specially licensed winter expeditions. The dates the F-roads open vary each year with the snow, so if you are booking for June, expect a possible reschedule.

Is a super jeep tour comfortable?

Comfortable enough on the tarmac, bumpy on the rough stuff. That is the point. Expect to be thrown about on lava tracks and river beds, and to sit in a bench seat for several hours. People prone to motion sickness should sit in front and take a tablet. The trade-off is access: you see places coaches cannot go, with a driver-guide who talks to you rather than over a microphone.
