Family adventures in Iceland: ages and prices
Family-friendly activities in Iceland with prices: a €81 beach ride, €147 rafting from age 8, a €235 snowmobile and slide trip. What suits which age.

The short version
- The cheapest family adventure is a 30 minute beach ride in Vík at about €81. Rafting for children starts around €147 per adult.
- Arctic Rafting welcomes children from about 8 to 10. Check each listing for the exact minimum.
- A family buggy trip costs about €460 and a private family northern lights tour about €1,030.
- Private family tours are priced per group, so they are cheaper per head with a bigger family.
For young children in Iceland, the best adventures are short, active and not too cold: a beach ride in Vík from about €81, a snowmobile and slide trip from about €235, and family rafting from about €147 once they are old enough. Long bus days are the thing to avoid.
Minimum ages vary by operator and change, so read the listing before you book. What follows is what each one is, honestly.
Under 8: short and simple
Family Beach Ride from Vík Horse Adventure is €81 and 30 minutes on the black sand. It is the cheapest thing here and the right length for a small child’s attention. Check the listing for the age and weight limits, and dress for wind, because Vík is exposed.
Princess Experience at Lake Rauðavatn is €259 for 30 minutes, near Reykjavík. It suits very young children who love costumes and horses or are happy with a short session. It is a lot of money for half an hour, so decide whether it is a treat or a filler.
Around 8 to 12: more active
Family Fun Rafting with Arctic Rafting is €147 per adult and three hours. The listing says it welcomes children from about 8 to 10. Family Rafting (West) from Viking Rafting is €161 and 3.5 hours. Both are gentler than the adult trips. I’d pick on pickup and date, not on the river.
A snowmobile ride on a glacier is a bigger event. Snowmobile and slide Family tour is €235 and two hours, with pickup possible. It runs in winter and spring. Children usually remember the slide more than the scenery, which is fine.
Any age: buggies and private days
2 Hour Family Buggy Adventure from 4x4 Adventures is €460 and two hours. Check whether that price covers one buggy or one person, since buggies often carry two or more. If it is per buggy, a family of four sharing two buggies is a different sum from a family of two.
For a private evening, Northern Lights for Families from Taste Iceland is €1,030 for about 3.5 hours with pickup, designed for children. It is priced per group. It is expensive, and it comes with no promise of lights. A short private trip suits a child who will be asleep in the car by nine, because a long group bus does not.
Where families go wrong
They book too much. Children cope with one big thing a day. Two hours on a glacier and a long drive home is enough. A south coast day with waterfalls and a beach already fills a seven year old’s day, so adding an ice cave tour turns it into a complaint.
They also underpack. Wind and spray at Vík and on the Reykjanes coast are the usual reason a trip ends early. Hire clothes if you need to: a children’s coat rental is cheap compared with a cut-short tour.
Our honest take
For a first trip with children under eight, the €81 beach ride and a free afternoon is the best value. For children of 8 or more who like water, Arctic Rafting’s family trip at €147 is the one adventure that feels like a real event.
Skip the private options unless you have four or more in the party, or a child who cannot cope with a group. Always check the age limit on the day you book. Operators change them, and a child turned away at the meeting point is the most expensive mistake on this page.
