Katla ice cave tour price: from Vík or Reykjavík?

Katla ice cave tour price: from Vík or Reykjavík?

The short version

  • From Vík, a 3-hour Katla ice cave tour starts around €215 to €220 per adult. You get to Vík yourself.
  • From Reykjavík, a 10 to 11 hour day with the cave included starts around €261 to €264. Add about €125 for a Super Jeep operator.
  • The Reykjavík price covers the 2.5 hour drive each way and the south coast stops, so it is the cheaper way to see the whole day.
  • Private versions start above €1,200 and are priced per group, not per person.

A Katla ice cave tour costs about €215 to €220 per adult if you meet the guide in Vík. From Reykjavík it starts around €261 to €264, and a private tour starts above €1,200. The gap between the first two is smaller than people expect, because the Reykjavík price includes the drive.

The cave itself is the same ice either way. Katla sits under Mýrdalsjökull, the ash-streaked glacier above Vík, and the dark bands in the walls are old eruptions. You can’t say in advance which cave is open, because guides pick the route that is safe on the day.

From Vík: the cheapest ticket, if you are already there

Katla Ice Cave Tour, Meet in Vík (€215) and Katla Ice Cave & Super Jeep from Vík (€220) are both three hours and meet on location. The Arctic Adventures listing describes a Super Jeep ride up, a guided walk on Kötlujökull and then the ice tunnels. Gravel Travel’s Vík to Katla (€219) is the same idea.

The catch is simple. The ticket does not include getting to Vík. From Reykjavík that is about 2.5 hours each way by car. If you have a rental car and are already sleeping on the south coast, these are the ones to book. If you don’t, the transport cost will wipe out the saving.

From Reykjavík: one price, one long day

South Coast & Katla Ice Cave from Reykjavík (€261, 10 hours, Gravel Travel) and BusTravel Iceland’s version (€264, 11 hours) bundle the drive, the usual south coast stops and the cave. Both list pickup or a meeting point, so check the pickup details on the page.

Do the sum. A Vík ticket at €215 plus fuel and a long drive costs more in effort than the extra €46 for a driver and a day plan. Without a car, the Reykjavík day is the better value by some distance.

It is a long day. You spend more hours in a vehicle than on the glacier. Fine if you want the waterfalls and the black beach too. Not fine if you only care about the ice.

Private: what the money does

Private Vík to Katla Ice Cave (€1,285) is the same three-hour cave with only your party. Private tours are priced per vehicle or group, not per seat, so €1,285 for a family of six is about €214 each. That is the same as the public ticket. For two people it is six times as much.

So private makes sense for a group of five or six, for someone with mobility needs who wants the pace set for them, or for a photographer who wants time. It makes little sense for a couple.

Where the price jumps

The cheapest tickets in this market start in the low €100s. Median is around €388, set by the long Super Jeep days such as Superjeep.is DT 02 South Coast and Katla Ice Cave (€388, 11 hours). That one is a smaller vehicle, with more time and a more flexible guide. It is worth it if you want the cave to be the point of the day, not an item on a list.

Our honest take

If you have a car, book Katla Ice Cave Tour, Meet in Vík at €215 and spend the night in Vík so you are not driving at both ends of a three-hour trip. Without a car, book South Coast & Katla Ice Cave from Reykjavík at €261. Skip the private option unless there are five or more of you.

One warning. Do not pay for the cave and assume it will definitely run. Conditions change, and operators move or cancel tours. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, and leave a spare day if you can.
