Northern lights from Akureyri: which tour

Akureyri is a good northern lights base: dark sky 15 minutes out and a second weather system. Book the €122 classic tour; skip the pricier 4x4 unless it snows.

Northern lights from Akureyri: which tour

The short version

  • Northern lights tours from Akureyri run September to April, starting around 21:30.
  • The classic small-group hunt is from €122, with pickup, hot chocolate and a free retry if nothing shows.
  • The 4x4 version is from €244, the same hunt in a vehicle that handles snowy side roads.
  • Private from €978 for the vehicle; with GeoSea sea baths in Húsavík, from €1,594.
  • Nobody can promise the lights. Book early in your stay so the free retry has a night to use.

Short answer: book the Northern Lights Classic Tour from €122. It leaves at 21:30, collects you from your hotel in town, and gives you a free retry the next night if you see nothing. Pay more only if you want a private car or a soak in the sea baths at Húsavík.

Why Akureyri works

Two reasons. First, the dark is close. Akureyri is a town of 20,000, and ten or fifteen minutes’ drive up Eyjafjörður or over the hills is enough to lose the street lights. From Reykjavík the same escape takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Second, the north has its own weather. When a low comes in from the south and covers Reykjavík in cloud, the mountains often leave the north drier. Not always. Sometimes it’s the other way round. But if you’re splitting your trip between the two, you get two chances at a clear night rather than one.

You can check tonight’s odds on our northern lights forecast, which includes Akureyri. It combines the Kp index with the cloud forecast, and the cloud matters more.

The classic tour

Imagine Iceland’s Northern Lights Classic Tour is from €122 and runs from late September to April. The guide picks the spot on the night based on the cloud forecast. Hot chocolate and biscuits are included, and so is pickup from hotels and guesthouses in Akureyri. Minimum age three.

The free retry applies when no lights are seen, provided there’s a group tour the next night. So book it on your first night in town, not your last.

Read the cancellation terms. Imagine Iceland charges 10% if you cancel at any point after booking, rising to 50% in the last two days. That’s stricter than most. If the tour itself is cancelled for weather, that’s a different matter and you get your money back.

The 4x4 tour

The Northern Lights 4x4 Tour is from €244, twice the classic, from the same operator with the same start time, same retry and same hot chocolate. What the extra money buys is the vehicle. On a snowy night a 4x4 can reach side roads and higher ground that a minibus can’t, which widens the search when the clear patch is somewhere awkward.

In October or April, when roads are usually clear, that’s rarely worth €122 more. In January, after fresh snow, it can be.

Private tours

Star Travel’s private northern lights hunt is from €978 for the vehicle, not per seat, with the guide choosing the location on the night. For two people it’s a luxury. For a family of five or six it costs less per head than you’d think and you set the pace, including when to give up and go home.

Private Northern Lights & GeoSea is from €1,594, a private minibus that drives to Húsavík, puts you in the GeoSea sea baths with the entry fee included, and looks for lights on the way there and back. It starts at 18:00 and runs October to March. Check how many people the price covers before you compare it with anything. The bath happens whatever the sky does, which is the point: a cloudy night still gives you something.

If you’re coming from Reykjavík as well, our guide to bus, boat or super jeep covers the options down south.

Our honest take

Book 103352 on your first night in Akureyri and let the retry do its job. Dress for standing still in the cold, not for walking: a hat, gloves, a proper coat and warm boots.

Upgrade to the 4x4 only when there’s snow on the roads. Book the GeoSea night if you want the evening to count whatever the sky does. The lights themselves are never certain.

And don’t come in June or July. There is no dark sky in the north then, and no tour on this page runs.
