Getting here without a car

The 29 tours we sell that stop at Jökulsárlón leave from Reykjavík, Skaftafell and Djúpivogur, with a handful from 2 smaller towns. Most of them start in Reykjavík, so for anyone based in the capital there is nothing to arrange beforehand.

The distance is the thing nobody warns you about. Jökulsárlón is around 370 km from Reykjavík, so a day trip from the capital is fifteen or sixteen hours with a great deal of it spent looking at the ring road in the dark for half the year. If you can, sleep a night at Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur or Höfn and go from there — the tours leaving those towns are shorter, cheaper and far better days out.

Being driven is the easy answer here: enough operators run it that a cancellation rarely loses you the day, and you get to look out of the window instead of at the road.
