About this experience
Join Your Friend In Reykjavik on a private bespoke tour around the Reykjanes Peninsula.
In 2015, UNESCO recognized Reykjanes as an area of international geological significance and announced it as an official UNESCO Global Geopark. The site is managed with a holistic protection, education, and sustainable development concept.
There are 55 geosites on the peninsula, a young section of Iceland, and we will visit the most impressive of them.
During this tour, you can also soak in the iconic Blue Lagoon, renowned for its mineral-rich geothermal waters.
Pick up from your hotel in Reykjavik
We will pick you up from your hotel in Reykjavik at the selected time.
Bridge Between Continents (20 minutes)
Iceland is the only place in the world where you can see the mid-Atlantic Ridge above ground and the Eurasian and North American Tectonic plates. The ridge rises above ground in Reykjanes, and the Bridge Between the Continents allows you to stand on a bridge between the continents.
The tectonic plates continuously drift apart, creating fissures that form due to stresses caused by the tension that builds up as the plates move from each other. The Bridge in Sandvík is over a significant crack which provides clear evidence of the presence of the plates drifting apart.
Gunnuhver (20 minutes)
Close to Reykjanes Lighthouse is the Gunnuhver area. The area is named after a female ghost named Gunna, who supposedly lies there. She had been causing quite a bit of havoc until a priest set a trap for her, and she fell into the spring. The area is full of mud pools and hot springs. The mud pools form where steam from boiling geothermal reservoir water emanates, condenses, and mixes with surface water. The biggest mud pool in Iceland is now in the Gunnuhver area. It is 20 meters wide across the rim and boils vigorously.
Reykjanes Lighthouse & Valahnúkamöl (40 minutes)
Reykjanes Lighthouse
The first lighthouse in Iceland was built on Valhnúkur in Reykjanes in 1878. However, a few years later, earthquakes and surf had damaged the lighthouse so much there was a risk it would fall into the sea. A new lighthouse was built a few meters inland on Bæjarfell.
Valahnúkamöl
Reykjanestá, also known as Valahnúkamöl, is a breathtaking destination in Iceland at the southwestern tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Renowned for its stunning landscapes, this area offers visitors a unique opportunity to observe the mid-Atlantic ridge, a geological feature marking the divergent boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
As you explore Valahnúkamöl, you'll come across a poignant statue of the Great Auk, which stands on the cliffs as a tribute to the species hunted to extinction, with the last known pair killed in 1844 nearby. In the background, you'll see Valahnjúkur - the cliffs also serve as a habitat for numerous colonies of seabirds, including a large population of kittiwakes. Visitors are encouraged to admire these birds from a distance to ensure their tranquility while enjoying the natural beauty surrounding them.
Blue Lagoon (2 hours)
The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal SPA in southwestern Iceland. It is located in a lava field 5 km from Grindavík and in front of Mount Þorbjörn on the Reykjanes Peninsula, in a place favorable for geothermal power, and is supplied by water used in the nearby Svartsengi Geothermal Power Station.
Named one of 25 wonders of the world by National Geographic in 2012, the Blue Lagoon was honored for its unique geothermal seawater. Found nowhere else on earth, this renowned resource is rich in silica, algae, and minerals - the elements that give the lagoon its skin-nourishing powers.
With a sauna, steam room, steam cave, mask bar, massage waterfall, and an in-water beverage bar, the lagoon is rich with possibilities for a uniquely unforgettable adventure.
The Blue Lagoon Comfort admission includes:
- Access to the Blue Lagoon
- Silica Mud Mask at the Mask Bar
- Use of towel
- 1st drink of your choice at the In-water bar
Children aged 2-13 share a locker with a parent/supervisor. Drink is not included with a free child pass.
Children 8 years and younger are required to use the arm floaties provided.
Lunchtime - Papas' Restaurant in Grindavik (45 minutes)
We will stop for lunch at a nice restaurant in Grindavik. Please note that food is not included. https://papas.is/
Seltún Geothermal Area (25 minutes)
Seltún is a geothermal field in Krýsuvík and within the Krýsuvík volcanic system. The land is owned by Hafnafjörður town, and they tried many years ago to drill boreholes to utilize the geothermal water there. They managed to drill the holes, but the system exploded some years later.
The area contains mud pools, beautiful earth colors, and boiling water. The smell can be a bit smelly as it is a geothermal area, but it is worth seeing. Not far away from Seltún is Fúli-pollur, or Bad Smelling Puddle.
Kleifarvatn (20 minutes)
Kleifarvatn Lake is the largest of the Reykjanes Peninsula and the third largest in southern Iceland. It is about 97 meters deep, making it one of Iceland’s deepest lakes. In the south of the lake, hot water runs into it from a hot spring, but otherwise, it is freezing. The surrounding area is stunning with lava and other rock formations, which makes this a perfect photo opportunity.

Free cancellation until 24 hours before departure; no refund after that. If the operator cancels for weather or safety, you get a full refund or a new date.
If the weather cancels this tour
Iceland's weather is real. What usually stops this one is a forecast the operator judges unsafe. Here is exactly what happens to your booking.
- 1Your Friend in Reykjavik decides, and tells us. Operators cancel when it is unsafe or pointless, and we back that call every time — we do not ask them to run anyway.
- 2We contact you by email, and by phone if your tour is the same or next day. You choose: another date if there is one you can make, or a full refund. There is no fee and nothing to argue.
- 3The refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe, usually visible within a few working days. If this tour was one of several in your booking, the others are untouched.
What you do not get is the day back. If this is the only free day in your plan, put a spare day next to it — the planner leaves days free with the rest-day option. And if you want out because the forecast looks bad, that is your own cancellation: free until 1 day before departure, the operator's policy after that.

Petra was an incredible guide. We asked her to show us as much as she could before taking our crazy family of 10 to the airport for our flights to three different cities ! First stop was the beautiful church in downtown Reykjavik that had just opened with an organ recital. Next stop a lovely spot and observation sight overlooking the city by the Pearl. Cold and wet she found us a lovely coffee shop with the best pastries for a welcome mid morning rest next to the sea. Back in the van we drove for a bit before having the opportunity to explore a geothermal field on our way to the airport. A perfect day and ending to our time in Iceland. Petra shared alot of history and information from the perspective of a local which we all appreciated and enjoyed!

Nice walking trip in Reykjavik city centre with our local guide Hrafn, very friendly and knowledgeable. A good introduction to Iceland on the very first day of our 2 weeks road-trip around the island 👍

Lagoons & spas — questions people ask
Is the Blue Lagoon worth it or is it too touristy?
It is busy and it is worth it, once. The water is milky blue from silica, the setting in the Reykjanes lava is unlike anywhere else, and it sits twenty minutes from Keflavík Airport, so it fits an arrival or departure day. Book a time slot in advance; it sells out. If crowds bother you, go early morning or after 20:00. The Secret Lagoon or Fontana on the Golden Circle are calmer and cheaper alternatives.
Can I do the Blue Lagoon on the way to or from the airport?
Yes, and it is the best way to use it. Transfers like IceTransfer's Keflavík to Blue Lagoon to Reykjavík (/experience/1036423/) or the reverse (/experience/1036419/) stop at the lagoon for a few hours with your luggage stored. Allow at least three hours at the lagoon and check that your slot lines up with your flight. Note that the Reykjanes eruptions have closed the lagoon at short notice; check its status before travelling.
What is the difference between the Secret Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon?
The Secret Lagoon at Flúðir is a simple, warm geothermal pool with a bubbling hot spring beside it and basic changing rooms. It is on the Golden Circle, so it slots into a sightseeing day (/experience/17050/, /experience/624446/). The Blue Lagoon is a spa: silica masks, swim-up bar, saunas and a price to match. If you want a soak after a day of waterfalls, Secret Lagoon. If you want the spa day, Blue Lagoon.
Do I have to shower naked before a pool in Iceland?
Yes, at every public pool and most lagoons. Swimwear off, wash thoroughly with soap, swimwear on, then into the water. It is a hygiene rule because Icelandic pools use very little chlorine, and it is taken seriously. Changing rooms are single-sex with open showers; some larger lagoons have a few private cubicles. Nobody looks. It feels odd for thirty seconds and then it does not.
