Hrísey island day trip from Akureyri

The short version

  • Hrísey sits in Eyjafjörður. You drive about 20 minutes from Akureyri to Árskógssandur and take the ferry across.
  • Guided e-mountain-bike tour: €235 per person, 4 hours, ferry, helmet and a light snack included, starts 09:15.
  • A private taxi Akureyri to Árskógssandur is €139 each way. It is the dearest part of a self-guided day.
  • The e-bike tour runs in summer only. Check dates before planning a winter visit.

Short answer: Hrísey is a small island with one village, a lighthouse trail and a geothermal bath. The simple way to do it is the guided e-bike tour at €235, which includes the ferry. If you do not cycle, go on your own and spend the day walking, but sort out the 20-minute drive to the ferry first, because that is where the money goes.

Getting there

The ferry leaves from Árskógssandur, a village on the west side of Eyjafjörður. From Akureyri it is about 20 minutes by road. With a rental car, it is free. Without one, the only transfer we sell is a private taxi: Akureyri to Árskógssandur is €139, and the return from Árskógssandur to Akureyri is the same €139. Both are listed per person and the cancellation terms are tiered, so read them before you book.

That is €278 for a round trip of 40 minutes in total. We will not pretend that is a bargain. It is useful if you are a group, you have no car, and you want a fixed pickup. For two or more people sharing, ask whether the listing is per person or per car before you count on it.

The guided option

Northtrails’ Hrísey island private e-mountain-bike tour is €235 per person, four hours, and starts at 09:15 in Árskógssandur by the ferry. Included: a private guide, a full-suspension electric bike, the ferry fare, helmet, gloves, jersey and a light traditional snack. You take the ferry across, get to know the bikes in the village, then ride the trails up to the lighthouse at the top of the island.

When the tour ends, you can take the ferry back with your guide or stay on the island and catch a later one. That is the good part. The listing mentions the public geothermal baths, the restaurant and a walk around the village as ways to stay longer. Plan for it, because the island is more pleasant after the bike than during.

The downside is the price and the season. It is a private tour, so the cost is not shared, and the operator runs it in summer. Do not book it for January.

Doing it on your own

The island is small and flat enough that you do not need a guide to enjoy it. Take the ferry, walk to the lighthouse, eat, soak, and take the ferry back. You pay only the ferry fare and whatever you eat. We do not sell the ferry ticket, so check the timetable with the ferry operator before you go, and do not rely on a last sailing.

The Beer Spa at Árskógssandur is mentioned on the taxi listings as the other reason to be in that village. We do not sell it, so we will not recommend it, only point out that it is next to the ferry.

Who should skip it

If you only have one day in the north and the weather is clear, spend it on Mývatn or Goðafoss instead. Hrísey is a quiet half-day, not a headline sight. And if you do not care for cycling, the €235 buys you very little you cannot walk.

Our honest take

Book the e-bike tour if you want one memorable half-day and you are in the north between June and August. It is expensive, but the ferry, kit and guide are all in the number, and you control the afternoon.

Otherwise go independently. Hire a car for Akureyri anyway if you are staying more than two days, and the taxi problem disappears. Without a car, the €139 each way makes a self-guided day cost more than the guided one for a pair, so book the e-bike tour and spend the saving on lunch.

One honest warning: weather in Eyjafjörður shifts quickly, and a ferry day in a cold wind is a long way from a postcard. Dress as if you will be standing still on a boat, because you will.
