Is it worth it?

Snowmobiling is not worth it for most people, and it knows it

Short answer

Not worth it for most people

An hour on a machine on a flat white ice cap, at one of the highest prices per hour we sell — thrilling if that is your thing, and a poor trade against a glacier hike if it is not.

The short version

  • Not worth it for most people. An hour on a machine on a flat white ice cap, at one of the highest prices per hour we sell — thrilling if that is your thing, and a poor trade against a glacier hike if it is not.
  • We hold 32 day tours here from 11 operators, median €330 a person, cheapest €194.
  • Cheaper alternative: A glacier hike, at roughly a third of the price, puts you on the same ice for three times as long and you can hear it. If it is the speed you want, an ATV tour near Reykjavík costs less and does not need a glacier.

Worth it if

  • Riding an engine is the point, rather than the landscape.
  • You are already at Húsafell or Gullfoss and the glacier truck transfer is short.
  • You are travelling as a pair who will share a machine, which halves the cost of the expensive part.

Not worth it if

  • You want to see a glacier. You will see a flat white plateau at speed through a visor.
  • You are counting the cost per hour. Ride time is usually about sixty minutes.
  • You do not hold a full driving licence — you will be a passenger, which changes the purchase entirely.

What you are actually paying for

Overall, gloves, balaclava and helmet are included, so you turn up in ordinary clothes. Single riding costs meaningfully more than sharing. Most of the price is the glacier truck that gets you and the fleet up onto the ice cap.

Across our own contracted catalogue, snowmobiling day tours run to a median of €330 a person, with the cheapest we hold at €194, from 11 operators. Private and per-vehicle products are excluded, because mixing them into a per-person figure makes it meaningless.

The cheaper thing to do instead

A glacier hike, at roughly a third of the price, puts you on the same ice for three times as long and you can hear it. If it is the speed you want, an ATV tour near Reykjavík costs less and does not need a glacier.

Questions people ask

Is snowmobiling in Iceland worth it?

An hour on a machine on a flat white ice cap, at one of the highest prices per hour we sell — thrilling if that is your thing, and a poor trade against a glacier hike if it is not.

Do you need a licence to ride a snowmobile in Iceland?

To drive one yourself, yes — a valid full driving licence, carried with you. Without one you ride as a passenger behind a driver, which most operators allow and price differently.

How long do you actually ride for?

Usually about an hour on the machine. The rest of a four- or five-hour tour is the drive to base, the transfer up onto the glacier in a truck, and getting kitted out.
