Is it worth it?
42 things people ask about, answered including the noes
Every one of these is something we sell. 4 of them we would talk most people out of. The verdict is on the card, so you do not have to open anything to get the answer.
The short version
- 42 verdicts, grouped by answer: worth it, worth it with conditions, and not worth it for most people.
- 4 are a no. We still sell them, and each page says who the exception is.
- Every page names a cheaper alternative and prints the live median price from our own catalogue.

Is the Secret Lagoon worth it?
Worth it if you are already doing the Golden Circle that day, and not worth a dedicated 90-minute drive from Reykjavík.
Instead: Nothing cheaper is better. If even this is too much, the public pool in Flúðir and in every other village in Iceland costs a few euros.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is the Golden Circle worth it?
Worth it on a first trip because three genuinely different landscapes sit within a short loop; not worth repeating, and not worth a premium tour.
Instead: Hire a car for the day and drive it yourself: three hours of driving, total, on good roads. In summer that is the cheaper option for two people and the better one for four. In winter, take the coach.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is a glacier hike worth it?
Worth it for almost anyone reasonably mobile, because it is the one thing here you genuinely cannot do unguided — but meet at the glacier rather than buying the eleven-hour coach version if you possibly can.
Instead: Standing at the edge of Sólheimajökull is free and takes twenty minutes from the car park. It is not the same thing, but it is honest to say it exists.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is an ice cave tour worth it?
Worth it in winter, when the caves are real and the ice is blue; outside that window you are being sold a man-made tunnel under the same name, which is a different purchase at a higher price.
Instead: The lava tube at Raufarhólshellir is open all year, half an hour from Reykjavík, never cancels for weather and costs less. It is rock rather than ice, and it is the honest summer answer.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is the Lava Tunnel worth it?
Worth it, particularly on a day the weather has ruined everything else — a 1,360-metre lava tube half an hour from the city that is 6°C inside whatever is happening above.
Instead: Víðgelmir in the west or Vatnshellir on Snæfellsnes are the same kind of thing further out. If you are only in Reykjavík, Perlan’s indoor ice cave is cheaper and aimed at families.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Silfra snorkelling worth it?
Worth it if you understand what you are buying — thirty to forty minutes floating down a cold, empty, glass-clear fissure between two continental plates, with no fish and no coral.
Instead: Walking the Almannagjá rift at Þingvellir costs nothing and shows you the same geology from above. Our Silfra snorkelling versus diving guide covers the upgrade question.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is a South Coast tour worth it?
Worth it for most first-time visitors without a car: two big waterfalls, a black-sand beach and a glacier view in one day. The catch is the length, around ten hours from Reykjavík.
Instead: Hire a car for the day and drive Route 1 to Vík yourself. The stops are signposted and the only charges are parking at a couple of them.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Snæfellsnes worth it?
Worth it if you have seen the Golden Circle or want a quieter day: coast, lava fields, Kirkjufell and small harbours in one loop. It is a long day from Reykjavík, so an overnight is better.
Instead: Drive it yourself over two days with a night on the peninsula; it costs less than two tour seats and you can stop where you like.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Lake Mývatn worth it?
Worth it if you are in the north: lava pillars, craters, steaming ground and the Nature Baths within half an hour of each other. Not worth a flight from Reykjavík on its own for a short trip.
Instead: With a car, drive the lake loop yourself in an afternoon; nearly everything is signposted and free.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Húsavík whale watching worth it?
Worth it: Skjálfandi Bay is a feeding ground close to the harbour, so less of the trip is spent getting there. Not worth a special journey north for that alone. No one can promise a sighting.
Instead: From Reykjavík the trip is longer but still worth it if the north is not on your route.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Dettifoss worth it?
Worth it if you are near Mývatn: it is the most powerful waterfall in Europe by volume, grey with glacial silt and loud. It is out of the way, so it only makes sense as part of a northern day.
Instead: Drive yourself from Mývatn in summer — about forty-five minutes on the east-side road.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Krauma worth it?
Worth it as part of a day in Borgarfjörður: small baths fed by Deildartunguhver, the highest-flow hot spring in Europe, at a fair price. Not worth driving out for alone.
Instead: The free Deildartunguhver spring next door is worth ten minutes even if you skip the baths.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Friðheimar worth it?
Worth it as a lunch stop: tomato soup and bread in a working greenhouse, a short talk on how Iceland grows food with geothermal heat. Book ahead in summer.
Instead: A packed lunch at Þingvellir costs a few euros from any supermarket.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is the Lava Show worth it?
Worth it: real molten rock poured in front of you in Reykjavík or Vík, with a short, clear explanation. It is under an hour and one of the few things that works whatever the weather.
Instead: Walk the recent lava fields on Reykjanes, free, if you want the landscape rather than the molten rock.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is horse riding in Iceland worth it?
Worth it, including for beginners: the horses are small, calm and have a smooth gait of their own, the tölt. A short ride near Reykjavík is enough for most people.
Instead: Stop by a roadside field and look — Icelandic horses are everywhere. Do not feed them without asking.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is the Reykjanes Peninsula worth it?
Worth it near the airport: steaming ground at Gunnuhver, sea cliffs, the bridge between continents and fresh lava fields. It fills a gap around a flight better than any other day trip.
Instead: Drive the Reykjanes coast yourself with a rental car picked up at the airport.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Diamond Beach worth it?
Worth it, and free: ice from the glacier lagoon washes up on black sand across the road. It comes with Jökulsárlón and is not a separate trip.
Instead: Stay in Höfn or near Skaftafell and walk over at an hour when the coaches have gone.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Skaftafell worth it?
Worth it: glacier tongues, Svartifoss and marked trails in Vatnajökull National Park, and the base for some of the quieter glacier hikes. Too far for a day trip from Reykjavík.
Instead: The Svartifoss trail is free and about an hour and a half return.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Fjallsárlón worth it?
Worth it: a smaller lagoon ten minutes before Jökulsárlón, where the glacier face is closer and the car park emptier. The zodiac trips here get nearer the ice.
Instead: Walk the shore path for free; the view of the glacier is the same.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is a Reykjavík food tour worth it?
Worth it early in a trip: a few hours of tastings — lamb, fish, skyr, the hot dog — with a guide who explains what you are eating and where to go back to. It costs about what dinner would.
Instead: Bæjarins Beztu hot dogs and a bakery crawl cost a fraction and taste very Icelandic.
The full answer → - Worth it
Is Hraunfossar worth it?
Worth it inside a day in Borgarfjörður: springwater pouring out from under a lava field into a blue river, a short walk from the car park and free. Pair it with Into the Glacier or Krauma.
Instead: Drive yourself on a day with Deildartunguhver and Reykholt; all three are free.

Is the Blue Lagoon worth it?
Worth it on the way in from Keflavík or out to your flight; a poor use of a day if you travel out from Reykjavík and back for a two-hour soak.
Instead: A Reykjavík city pool costs about €8, has hot tubs and a steam room, and is what Icelanders actually do after work. If you want a lagoon with a landscape, the Secret Lagoon on the Golden Circle is roughly a third of the price.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is Sky Lagoon worth it?
Worth it as a quiet adult evening fifteen minutes from downtown; not worth a transfer, a tour or a rearranged day.
Instead: Sundhöll or Vesturbæjarlaug, two of the municipal pools, for around €8. Hot tubs, steam, a cold plunge, and locals rather than a booking system.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is Jökulsárlón worth the drive?
Worth it if you sleep in the southeast; a genuinely poor day if you take the 13-hour return coach from Reykjavík in winter.
Instead: The South Coast day tour stops at Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara and Vík for about half the driving and a lower price. If icebergs are the point and time is short, Fjallsárlón next door is quieter and closer.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is whale watching in Iceland worth it?
Worth it in the summer half of the year, particularly from the north; in midwinter it is a cold boat trip that may include a dolphin, made bearable by the free retry ticket.
Instead: The Húsavík Whale Museum costs a fraction of a boat ticket and explains what you would have been looking at. In midwinter with three days, we would rather you spent the money on an ice cave.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is a northern lights tour worth it?
Worth it if you have no car and several nights left, because the retry policy turns one ticket into several attempts; close to pointless if you are here for two nights or if you can drive twenty minutes out of town yourself.
Instead: Walk to Grótta lighthouse or take the bus to Heiðmörk, check tonight’s Kp and cloud on our own aurora page, and keep the money. On a strong clear night that works as well as any tour.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is a puffin tour worth it?
Worth it between roughly May and August, when the birds are ashore and the trip is short and cheap; the rest of the year they are at sea and there is nothing to see.
Instead: Walk out to the cliffs at Dyrhólaey or Borgarfjörður eystri in season and watch them for free from land, often closer than any boat gets. The Westman Islands hold the largest colony in the country.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is Landmannalaugar worth it?
Worth it between late June and September, when the highland roads open: coloured mountains, lava and a hot river. The rest of the year it is shut to normal traffic and only special winter trips go.
Instead: The highland bus from Reykjavík drops you at the hut for a day of walking at a fraction of a jeep tour.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is Þórsmörk worth it?
Worth it for walkers: a green valley between three glaciers, reached by super jeep or highland bus across rivers. Less worth it if you want to see things from a vehicle window.
Instead: The summer highland bus goes in and out daily for much less than a jeep tour, if you are happy to walk on your own.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is the Forest Lagoon worth it?
Worth it as an evening near Akureyri: a well-built lagoon in birch woods with a view over the fjord. Not a reason to travel north on its own.
Instead: Akureyri’s own swimming pool has hot tubs and slides for a few euros.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is Hvammsvík worth it?
Worth it for drivers: shallow pools on the shore of Hvalfjörður that change with the tide. Poor value by private transfer, which is how most of what we hold here is sold.
Instead: Sky Lagoon is fifteen minutes from downtown and needs no transfer.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is Kerið crater worth it?
Worth a short stop on the Golden Circle: a red crater with a green lake and a path around the rim. There is a small entry fee, and twenty minutes is plenty.
Instead: The craters at Mývatn, if you are going north, are larger and free.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is Perlan worth it?
Worth it with children or on a day the weather rules out going far: a well-made nature exhibition, a man-made ice cave and a viewing deck. Less worth it if you are about to see the real glaciers.
Instead: The tower of Hallgrímskirkja gives a city view for a small fee.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Are the Westman Islands worth it?
Worth it with time: a ferry to Heimaey, the 1973 eruption story, a volcano to climb and, in summer, the country’s biggest puffin colony. As a day from Reykjavík it is a lot of travel for a short visit.
Instead: Dyrhólaey on the South Coast has puffins in summer and no ferry.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is an ATV tour in Iceland worth it?
Worth it as a fun hour on black-sand tracks or lava trails; not worth it if you came for quiet. Drivers need a licence, and sharing a quad halves the price.
Instead: Hike the same kind of ground for free — the Reykjadalur hot river valley is an hour from Reykjavík.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is Kirkjufell worth it?
Worth it inside a Snæfellsnes day: the most photographed mountain in Iceland, with a small waterfall in front. On its own it is a short photo stop at the end of a long drive.
Instead: Stay a night in Grundarfjörður and see it in the evening without the coaches.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is a multi-day tour of Iceland worth it?
Worth it for people who will not or cannot drive, or who travel solo: hotels, transport and a guide are sorted. For a couple or family happy to drive, a self-drive trip usually costs less and is more flexible.
Instead: A self-drive package with the hotels booked gives the same route with your own car.
The full answer → - Worth it, with conditions
Is Laugarvatn Fontana worth it?
Worth it as a warm finish to the Golden Circle, with steam baths over a hot spring and rye bread baked in the ground. Less distinctive than the Secret Lagoon, which is nearby.
Instead: The Secret Lagoon at Flúðir is simpler and similar in price.

Not worth it for most people

Is Into the Glacier worth it?
A machine-dug tunnel inside Langjökull priced well above a natural ice cave, and in winter the natural cave is both cheaper and more interesting.
Instead: In winter, a natural ice cave at Katla or under Vatnajökull. In summer, the lava tube at Raufarhólshellir — half an hour from Reykjavík, open all year, and a fraction of the price.
The full answer → - Not worth it for most people
Is a super jeep tour worth it?
Worth the premium only where the vehicle is doing something an ordinary bus cannot — a highland F-road, a river crossing, a glacier approach. Everywhere else you are paying several hundred euros for a big truck on tarmac.
Instead: A standard coach or minibus day tour to the same stops, wherever the road is paved. For the highlands in summer, the scheduled highland bus reaches Landmannalaugar for far less.
The full answer → - Not worth it for most people
Is snowmobiling in Iceland worth it?
An hour on a machine on a flat white ice cap, at one of the highest prices per hour we sell — thrilling if that is your thing, and a poor trade against a glacier hike if it is not.
Instead: A glacier hike, at roughly a third of the price, puts you on the same ice for three times as long and you can hear it. If it is the speed you want, an ATV tour near Reykjavík costs less and does not need a glacier.
The full answer → - Not worth it for most people
Is a helicopter tour in Iceland worth it?
The most expensive hour available here by a wide margin, and the thing it does best — showing you a landscape too large to see from the ground — is done nearly as well by a window seat on a domestic flight.
Instead: The Reykjavík–Akureyri or Reykjavík–Ísafjörður domestic flight is a small aircraft at low altitude over the same country for a tiny fraction of the price, and it takes you somewhere. Failing that, a viewpoint hike.

How these are built
The opinion is written by hand and signed for. Everything numeric — tour counts, median seat prices, operator numbers, the tours listed at the bottom of each page — comes from the same contracted inventory the rest of this site runs on, read at build time. That is why we can put a price next to a verdict: we are quoting our own catalogue rather than a brochure.
Where we say no, we mean it, and the page still shows you what to book if you disagree. You know your own trip better than we do.
Questions people ask
How do you decide whether something is worth it?
Two inputs. The judgement is ours and is written down as a set of conditions rather than a score — who it suits and who it does not. The numbers under it are read from our own contracted catalogue at build time: how many tours we actually hold, what the median seat costs, how many operators run it.
Do you say no to things you sell?
Yes. 4 of these 42 verdicts are "not worth it for most people", and we sell every one of them. A page that recommends everything is an advert, not an answer.
Are the prices on these pages up to date?
They are rebuilt from the operators’ own live inventory every time the site is deployed, and each page says when. Nothing on them is typed in by hand.
Why take our word for it
One checkout, any number of operators
Book a glacier hike from one company and a whale boat from another in a single payment, with one booking reference.
Rankings are not for sale
We sort by rating, never by what an operator pays us. No supplier can buy a higher position here.
206 operators vetted, and not all of them accepted
We don't list everything in Iceland, on purpose. Every operator here is one we would book ourselves.
If it falls short, we fix it
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before most tours — and if an operator lets you down, tell us and we sort it out.
Keep planning
