A super jeep is not worth it unless the road needs one
Short answer
Not worth it for most people
Worth the premium only where the vehicle is doing something an ordinary bus cannot — a highland F-road, a river crossing, a glacier approach. Everywhere else you are paying several hundred euros for a big truck on tarmac.
The short version
Not worth it for most people. Worth the premium only where the vehicle is doing something an ordinary bus cannot — a highland F-road, a river crossing, a glacier approach. Everywhere else you are paying several hundred euros for a big truck on tarmac.
We hold 63 day tours here from 21 operators, median €338 a person, cheapest €117.
Cheaper alternative: A standard coach or minibus day tour to the same stops, wherever the road is paved. For the highlands in summer, the scheduled highland bus reaches Landmannalaugar for far less.
Worth it if
You are going to Landmannalaugar or Þórsmörk in summer, where rivers have to be forded.
You are reaching an ice cave or a glacier edge that has no road at all.
You are four people who want a private guide and would pay for a small vehicle anyway.
Not worth it if
The itinerary is the Golden Circle or the South Coast. Those are paved roads and a coach does them for a fraction of the price.
It is sold as a northern lights super jeep. The lights do not care what you arrived in.
You are two people. Private vehicles are priced per vehicle, so you are buying empty seats.
What you are actually paying for
This is one of the most expensive categories on the site and the reason is the vehicle, not the destination. Where the same place is also reachable by coach, compare the two prices before deciding the suspension is worth it.
Across our own contracted catalogue, super jeeps day tours run to a median of €338 a person, with the cheapest we hold at €117, from 21 operators. Private and per-vehicle products are excluded, because mixing them into a per-person figure makes it meaningless.
The cheaper thing to do instead
A standard coach or minibus day tour to the same stops, wherever the road is paved. For the highlands in summer, the scheduled highland bus reaches Landmannalaugar for far less.

Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) Nature Reserve is one of Iceland’s most captivating landscapes. Known for its expansive views, secluded waterfalls, dramatic canyons, birch forests, and glacier vistas.
Worth the premium only where the vehicle is doing something an ordinary bus cannot — a highland F-road, a river crossing, a glacier approach. Everywhere else you are paying several hundred euros for a big truck on tarmac.
What is a super jeep?+
A heavily modified 4x4 — usually a Land Cruiser, Defender or Ford truck — on oversized tyres that can be deflated for snow and sand, with a raised air intake for river crossings. Typically four to nine passengers.
Is a super jeep worth it for the northern lights?+
Rarely. The advantage claimed is reaching darker places, but the coach tours go to the same dark car parks and the sky is the sky. What you actually buy is a smaller group, which is a legitimate thing to want at a legitimate price — just not an aurora advantage.
