Whale watching is worth it from April to October and a gamble the rest of the year
Short answer
Worth it, with conditions
Worth it in the summer half of the year, particularly from the north; in midwinter it is a cold boat trip that may include a dolphin, made bearable by the free retry ticket.
The short version
Worth it, with conditions. Worth it in the summer half of the year, particularly from the north; in midwinter it is a cold boat trip that may include a dolphin, made bearable by the free retry ticket.
We hold 107 day tours here from 25 operators, median €139 a person, cheapest €19.
Cheaper alternative: The Húsavík Whale Museum costs a fraction of a boat ticket and explains what you would have been looking at. In midwinter with three days, we would rather you spent the money on an ice cave.
Worth it if
You are here between April and October, when humpbacks and minkes are feeding close in.
You can go from Húsavík, Dalvík or Akureyri rather than Reykjavík — smaller boats, better bay.
You will still be in the country the next day, so a retry ticket has value.
Not worth it if
You get seasick. Three hours on Faxaflói in a winter swell is a long time.
You are here for three days in January and this is the only wildlife you care about.
You are expecting a breach. Nobody can promise that in any month, and a tour that implies it is overselling.
What you are actually paying for
Three hours, a hull and a guide. The spread across this category is mostly boat size and whether hotel pickup is included — the bay, the crew’s skill and the whales are the same either way.
Across our own contracted catalogue, whale watching day tours run to a median of €139 a person, with the cheapest we hold at €19, from 25 operators. Private and per-vehicle products are excluded, because mixing them into a per-person figure makes it meaningless.
The cheaper thing to do instead
The Húsavík Whale Museum costs a fraction of a boat ticket and explains what you would have been looking at. In midwinter with three days, we would rather you spent the money on an ice cave.

Experience the thrill of whale watching from Reykjavík's picturesque Old Harbor on our specially equipped vessel, offering a front-row view of Iceland's majestic whales.

Can you see whales in Iceland in January?+
Yes, from Reykjavík and from Eyjafjörður in the north, which both sail year-round. Winter sightings are dominated by white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises with the occasional minke or humpback, so set expectations accordingly.
What is the free retry ticket?+
Most Reykjavík and north-coast operators give you a ticket for another trip if no whales or dolphins are seen on yours. It only has value if you are still in the country, so book whale watching early in your stay rather than on the last morning.
Reykjavík or Húsavík?+
Húsavík between April and October, if you are anywhere near the north — it is what the town does and the bay is better. Reykjavík any month, because Faxaflói is sheltered and close to the feeding grounds.
