Is it worth it?

A northern lights tour is worth it only because of the free retry

Short answer

Worth it, with conditions

Worth it if you have no car and several nights left, because the retry policy turns one ticket into several attempts; close to pointless if you are here for two nights or if you can drive twenty minutes out of town yourself.

The short version

  • Worth it, with conditions. Worth it if you have no car and several nights left, because the retry policy turns one ticket into several attempts; close to pointless if you are here for two nights or if you can drive twenty minutes out of town yourself.
  • We hold 97 day tours here from 40 operators, median €161 a person, cheapest €57.
  • Cheaper alternative: Walk to Grótta lighthouse or take the bus to Heiðmörk, check tonight’s Kp and cloud on our own aurora page, and keep the money. On a strong clear night that works as well as any tour.

Worth it if

  • You are here between September and April with at least three nights to spare.
  • You have no car, and the alternative is standing on a lit street in Reykjavík.
  • You want someone else reading the cloud forecast and choosing where to drive.

Not worth it if

  • You have a car. Grótta, on the edge of the city, is free and dark enough on a good night.
  • It is your last night. A cancelled tour becomes a refund, not an aurora.
  • You are paying a premium for a "photography" version and you do not care about the photographs.

What you are actually paying for

You are buying a driver, a cloud forecast and a dark car park. The cheap coach and the expensive minibus go to the same places under the same sky; the difference is seat count, hot chocolate and whether someone takes your picture.

Across our own contracted catalogue, northern lights day tours run to a median of €161 a person, with the cheapest we hold at €57, from 40 operators. Private and per-vehicle products are excluded, because mixing them into a per-person figure makes it meaningless.

The cheaper thing to do instead

Walk to Grótta lighthouse or take the bus to Heiðmörk, check tonight’s Kp and cloud on our own aurora page, and keep the money. On a strong clear night that works as well as any tour.

Questions people ask

Is a northern lights tour worth it?

Worth it if you have no car and several nights left, because the retry policy turns one ticket into several attempts; close to pointless if you are here for two nights or if you can drive twenty minutes out of town yourself.

What happens if the northern lights do not appear?

Almost every operator gives you a free second attempt, usually valid for the rest of your stay and sometimes longer. If the tour is cancelled before departure for cloud, that is a refund or a new date instead.

Is the boat or the bus better for northern lights?

The boat, more often than people expect: Faxaflói has no streetlights at all and the skipper can move to a gap in the cloud. The bus wins when the whole coast is overcast and the clear sky is two hours inland.

Which months have the best chance?

September to April, with the practical sweet spots in late September to October and February to March — long enough nights, and less of the deep-winter cloud. Nobody can promise a sighting on any given night.
